Time has come to finalise this series with the champion battle. The rival commands a party distinct from what Gary Oak / Blue used in the vanilla Kanto games for the GameBoy, and, several generations later, our options also function very differently. It's a 6vs6 battle as you'd expect from a champion match, and a different battle compared to the E4 fights for sure.
Pidgeot may seem similar to Blue's Pidgeot in vanilla games but actually happens to be our rival's toughest Pokemon, mega evolving and threatening nearly everything with its specially attacking moveset.
Chansey falls victim as my setter of Toxic in the lead matchup, taking massive damage from Quick Attack on the first turn and hardly able to contribute much from now onwards, which is very different from past battles where its stall, support and special sponging of matchups nobody could take care of reigned supreme. I stall a bit with Protect and switch out to Rhydon, who can survive Quick Attack with ease. The same cannot be said about the special Air Slash, so either Rhydon or Chansey will be KO'd, with the other rendered unable to help in the next fights - Chansey against the multiple special attackers in Rival's party, Rhydon against Raichu and Rapidash. Let's see how the party will carry on from here.
Vileplume will come, running dual coverage in Sludge Bomb and Solarbeam (I imagine the latter is easily cheesed with Protect on a mon resisting poison, but my strat was different), but also with Reflect in its set. We definitely don't want Reflect interfering with our future matchups, so I switch Jynx out. This is an unusual choice, as Jynx hasn't been all that helpful in the past E4 battles, but here Jynx puts Vileplume to sleep to avoid getting Sludge Bomb'd (that poison proc would cause him to succumb to the damage on repeated turns) and proceeds to attack with Ice Beam.
Rapidash will be lured due to Jynx's typing. Cloyster has an excellent matchup here, outspeeding and OHKOing with Surf after a single Shell Smash. This is perhaps its worst battle so far, as prior to the champion battle it always did something more, either chipping in against the next opponent or exploding in its face to weaken or outright kill it.
Raichu is switching in next, its Iron Tail making Rhydon, weakened by Air Slash, a poor counter. I use Nidoking instead, who survives Raichu's attempts at attacking with no trouble and OHKOs back with EQ.
Slowbro has to be the hardest opponent here. With Chansey down, we can't intoxicate it, nor would that be a good idea when a Full Restore is so likely to be used. Slowbro is extremelly sturdy on the physical side and has Light Screen to help support it on the weaker special side. My strat is again to exploit Jynx's relatively accurate sleeping in Lovely Kiss, securing it behind a Substitute and spamming Shadow Ball to eventually try and overpower Slowbro in time. I get extra careful and sleep it again when that last Shadow Ball is about to land the finishing hit; better safe than sorry, I suppose.
Marowak is the last opponent, and the lack of held items in Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu makes it rather tame offensively. Machamp can take care of it, but I go ahead and apply the same Jynx strategy to great effect again to win.
And so yet another 0 exp run has been finished. This is a very fitting time to finish the challenge with the new gen 4 remakes announced for release later this year. I imagine I will want to indulge in another 0 exp challenge in those games since I've covered every other generation of Pokemon with no exceptions, but it's not too unlikely that there will be other Pokemon content until then.
Still, I imagine that the people following this channel may be interested in seeing some other video game series in the meantime.
