The second battle of the Elite Four against the really brutal-looking Bruno. Since the fighting roster is scarce in Kanto, he uses all of them but Primeape, who is replaced by Onyx here. A sweep isn't easy to ensure here, with the fighting types easily taking an unboosted Psychic (Jynx CAN try setting up with Calm Mind but has to switch into Stealth Rocks and survive Hitmonchan and lee, both of whom outspeed her), so we employ a variety of strategies in order to succeed.
Onyx, as Bruno's lead, is very likely to set up Stealth Rock on the first turn. Cloyster can technically use Shell Smash twice here, surviving an Earthquake (which hits surprisingly hard coming from a freaking Onyx), but it is unnecessary, as the incoming Poliwrath can survive a Self-Destruct. Nevertheless, Jynx can finish what was previously started. Cloyster performed fine yet again, in spite of a type disadvantage.
Hitmonlee, switching in next, has no good options against a poison-type. Nidoking exploits this and Lee's low physical defence to stay in and 2HKO with Earthquake. Outspeeding Machamp, Bruno's strongest attacker, is good enough motivation to stay in, if nothing else, to put up Reflect.
RBY's small roster really shows here - previously, Jynx took out Cloyster, while Cloyster took out Jynx. This time, it's a Machamp duel. Being slower helps for a change, with Reflect, Superpower's self-inflicted attack/defence debuff and my Machamp's Bulk Up allowing me to OHKO Bruno's toughest Pokemon with my own Superpower.
Hitmonchan is the last one standing, with no STABs to speak of. His elemental punches can do nothing to Rhydon, who is actually strong enough to 2HKO with Earthquake in spite of not hitting any weakness (and Hitmonchan being the sturdier between him and Lee).
I gotta say Let's Go are very fun games. There may not be an abundance of options to choose from, but the situations that naturally arise as you prepare for these fights are incredibly entertaining. It's positively refreshing following some of the recent games with their mega evolutions and Dynamaxes, simplicity actually contributing to great matchups.
