The FPS genre began to get its teeth when Wolfenstein 3D the grandfather of FPS games was released in 1992, 1993 is when the father of FPS games and to me, overall most important FPS ever, Doom was released. By 1996 the talk was that 3D would be the great leap for FPS games as the build engine "era" had begun, and with major difficulties happening during it's developement, I.D. Software's Quake would lead to a defining point not just for that company but FPS games in general.

Quake originally was released on June 22nd 1996, this is a remastered port by NightDive studios using the KEX engine and was given a PS5 port which is what I'm using, that port released on October 12th 2021. This remaster contains all the expansion packs made for Quake alongside a new episode by MachineGames named "Dimension of the Machine". Please keep in mind that what you see here may not reflect on what Quake was like way back in 1996.

Quake doesn't really have a solid story, It's instruction manual noted that "Quake", a malevolent force of monsters has invaded after we built a slipgate to new worlds but in the ending text of each chapter, of the original game note the appearance of Shub-Niggurath who's hellish minions of Quake are invading all throughout 4 worlds and we require 4 runes of black magic to close these slipgates and stop the invasion. We assume control of the un-named protagonist who I refer to, personally, as Ranger (since he has this name in Quake III Arena). The 4 episodes all have a secret map and have a distinct gothic style and seem to also be inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft.

Firstly, much changed in Quake as Doom did not have true "jumping" in the sense rather we had to jump by running over gaps, We can jump and there's a huge emphasis of learning to rocket and grenade jump to reach higher ground or secrets we can't get normally. Enemy list is another inspiration from the work of H.P. Lovecraft with the "Shambler" which can claw you to death or use lightning being a tanky son of a bitch regardless of difficulty, other monsters along the way also fit the bill.

Quake's music is just... beautiful even if its just ambience, composed by American rock band Nine Inch Nails with frontman Trent Reznor voicing Ranger from his damage and death noises to the jump sound that is embedded in my memory. Quake's themes change as each chapter is played with the Lovecraft influence taking over fully in the Elder World, Chapter 4.

There's a few things that'll affect your judgement of this port, the most notorious to me and my "Duke Nukem/FPS/Game Talk" Discord is that Nightmare mode was changed dramatically where the Ogre no longer will fire grenades non-stop and alongside that, Our health once it drops to 50 remains there for the entire game and our ammo runs out twice as fast. The controls take time since the X Y axis sensitivity is fixed to high and your camera is very touchy, also having the motion control set when you move the controller up and down to look around by default? Yeah no, screw that.

Just like the Classic Unity Ports of Doom and Doom II, Quake has a bunch of addons to download made by authors and one of them is Quake 64, which was the 1998 port for said console with its unique color palate, these addons are free and are decent, multiplayer is alright on this port but I never really see much except deathmatch.. Shame those lazy fuckers at Bethesda couldn't add the online multiplayer to the Classic Unity Port(s) on a side note. Again, I'm a big FPS player and Quake is among my most played games, it's in my blood and for how old it is, It's aged like wine to me and anyone out there owes it to themself to play this legend.
