Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit is a 1998 arcade racing sim developed and published by Electronic Arts for the original PlayStation and Windows PCs. In NFS3, players race high profile sports cars from Chevrolet, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc., in various races, including tournaments, knockouts (where the last place car is eliminated every lap), and most famously, Hot Pursuits, where the player is tasked with completing a set number of laps with an oppenent while avoiding the Police. Gameplay wise, NFS3 is one of the most arcady games in the series, with no damage models, instant resets if the car is flipped on it's roof, and physics that belong in a pinball game and not in a racing sim. This is likely why this game is so well loved by fans. The goofy antics that can be pulled off while driving 200+ miles per hour are amazingly fun. No to mention the fact that the police A.I. is quite competent, and will use roadblocks, spike strips and team work to bring you to justice. The racing A.I. is likewise very competent, and offers a fairly strong challenge to the player. That said, the PlayStation version does have some graphical issues such as pop in and tearing, and it also has a fairly small selection of cars, even if you include the unlockable cars. However, despite these issues, the game is still very fun, and includes a good variety of tracks, and a very solid soundtrack. The formula was so good that EA has tried to capture it in sequels, including Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for the GameCube, PS2, Xbox and Windows in 2002, and the much more recent (and arguably more accurate reboot) Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in 2010 for Mobile, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and Windows.
