R: Racing Evolution - Gamecube - Attract & Race Gameplay various modes (Widescreen) [4K]
Namco gave the Ridge Racer series a more realistic twist with R: Racing on Nintendo Gamecube, PlayStation (PS2) and Xbox. The game was clearly Namco trying to create a Gran Turismo style spin off, with a mixture of different types of driving sports, including racing, rally and drag strip to name but a few. Complete with a flesh out story mode, that while nice isn't that needed, still it does quite a good job of showing the racing world and we can't help get the feeling ModNation Racers may have borrowed some ideas from it.
The Gamecube version features a widescreen option and while not true widescreen it still holds up well on this now 20 years old system. As a whole R: Racing is very smooth to play and the driving is pretty good fun. Staying behind opponents for long enough causes them to panic, which is an interesting idea. The PAL version seems to hold a fairly smooth 50fps.
The Ridge Racer series was beginning to run out of steam when it appeared and while a solid title, there were better games on the market at that point. Certainly on Gamecube many users bought the game purely to play the game PAC-MAN VS. which was included with it on a second disc.
