Developed by Lowtek Games the version we are looking at is the special edition published by WAVE games and available from their website. Originally developed as a NES title, the game was later ported to both PC and Dreamcast.
Flea! is an action platformer that is largely set on a single screen with you having to hop your way to the exit of each stage. Being a flea that can never stop jumping you have to avoid the various traps and enemies to clear each stage. The game is designed as a tough platformer and each stage is fill with lots of blood jars to collect to grant you an extra life when you encounter the big flea every 5-10 stages. There are also boss stages which largely fall into a chase scene, where you have to out run the boss before they catch up.
Death is very common so be prepared to die over and over again on your journey to defeat the King Flea who's decided to take all the blood for himself. Along the way you meet a colourful cast of fellow flea's along with Tapeworm (That's a worm that lives in an old cassette tape) and who is also the star of Lowtek's follow up game Tapeworm Disco Puzzle. Along the way you learn new moves, that allow you to reduce your jump height and even dash in mid air.
While the game is tricky it's not insanely hardly and is very similar to games like Super Meat Boy. Our editor has finished it a few times now and it's a solid little platformer. It's not that long and most platform veterans will finish it in a few hours, more moderate players will take longer. Music and visuals are decent enough for the NES, but could be better even on the 8 bit system. It would have been nice if the Dreamcast version had been given a graphics update. End of the video shows how to access the hidden level select section, which is great for players who want to practice certain stages.
