Star Trek The Next Generation Pinball Review
Designed by Steve Ritchie and released in 1993 by Williams, this is just one of the four Star Trek Pinballs that was released throughout the franchise's history. The object of the game is to campaign through 7 USS Enterprise missions and enter the Final Frontier. You can activate missions by entering the center hole, choosing one at command decision, or selecting a mission at the beginning of each ball. You don't need to win each mission to move on, which is nice if you're just trying to see all the features this table has to offer. The Next Generation features 3 flippers, 3 ramps, 3 bumpers and lane dividers, and the usual probe launchers, which are used for battle simulation missions or launching a probe. There's also a video mode where you control a shuttle going through some tunnels. It's good but the inputs are questionable at times. The probes have a bit of a delay as well but that's more expected because it's mechanical. They also do a good job of obstructing my view for greater challenge. The sound production is great. Even if you've never been into Star Trek, you can't help but appreciate the iconic characters show up on dot matrix display. The table is a bit complex and can feel like a handful at first, though the directives are clear and helpful . Since you don't have to win missions to continue, you can just activate them and hold your ball with a flipper, so you get to the final frontier easier. luckily they made a the ball a bit trickier to catch than most other tables. Just remember to pick up some artifacts before you embark for big points. Overall, Star Trek The Next Generation is a bold an d engaging table. Missing shots is often punished by knocking you ball out of control, making this table geared towards more serious players.
