#SuperOldGameSaturday - Donkey Kong Country (Super Nintendo) & Sonic Origins (Switch)

With me overestimating the length of our last RPG, Sailor Moon: Another Story here on #SuperOldGameSaturday, we ended up with a free week, so I decided to use it to redo a game I previously played (but don't have the recording of anymore), which is one that shaped a good amount of my gaming life in the mid-1990s. It's 1994's Donkey Kong Country, the reboot of the Donkey Kong series that helped the Super Nintendo win the 16-bit console war against the Sega Genesis and used its Silicon Graphics/Alias-powered 3D graphics to do it. Yet, despite some backlash against this one, claiming it as a case of "all style and no substance" (including Shigeru Miyamoto, the original creator of Donkey Kong), it's a terrifically polished and fun game with outstanding controls, some of the best music you'll ever hear on this system, many hidden secrets and a great sense of forward momentum that kind of made this Nintendo's true answer to the Sonic the Hedgehog games. As such, we played this to 101% and had a very active chat going into all our memories of this one, as well as some great lore discussions on this series, our favorite DKC games and other discussions about the recent Nintendo Direct Mini announcements, Pixar movies, glitches with this game, some differences between its Japanese version (which we could show with the Nintendo Switch Online service we used to play) and many more. Also, since we were talking about Sonic and how it and DKC were THE games I was playing in the mid-1990s, I decided to also give a brief tour of the Switch version of the recent Sonic Origins, its features and, it must be said, its glitches. Not that it's a horrible release, but Origins has work that should be done to it to make it the ultimate Sonic compilation that it's so close to being and it fit well with this show, which I had a great time doing and thank all of you in chat for adding so much to.
