#SuperOldGameSaturday - Tetris 2 (Super Nintendo)
Originally Recorded/Aired on Friday, July 22nd, 2022
It's time for another Friday entry of #SuperOldGameSaturday (which I guess we should call #SuperOldGameAlmostSaturday going forward) and, just like the last Friday show we had for Wario's Woods, it's a puzzle game that's this month's viewer request program, courtesy of ElecVerse and ElecVerse's mother, and it's another great and underrated 16-bit puzzler getting a well-deserved modern spotlight. Tetris 2, known as Tetris Flash in Japan, first hit the NES and Game Boy from Nintendo R&D1 and Tose in 1993, but we played the Bullet-Proof Software-developed Super Nintendo version from 1994, which has a unique puzzle mode and its own Earthbound-esque visual style. This is actually the first game I ever played on this show almost 2 years ago, but with better equipment and it being recorded, we're giving it the full play now as the first Tetris game we've shown, though it plays a lot like Dr. Mario. Yet, there's a unique style, clever mechanics (like tetriminos that can be broken off) and some great music to set this one apart and, as always, the chat and I went all in with our memories and insights on this one, as well as other personal and gaming topics such as other puzzle games, other Tetris games, the difficulty of puzzle games of the time, the ways in which ideas were turned into games in unconventional ways and the recent Nintendo Switch Online puzzle game releases that give a possibility that this may have a way to be introduced to modern audiences. I had a great time playing this one and mixing it up with the chat on this hidden puzzle gem and I thank ElecVerse and ElecVerse's mother for requesting this and contributing to this and so many of our shows. Hope you enjoy our play of Tetris 2 (and if you like what you see here, stop by https://www.twitch.tv/captainditrag each Saturday at 7 PM EST to see these streams live and join/help drive the conversations on what we play each week)!
