The amount of Iron Stance Waterfall Phantom has is absurd. I need two full Incineration Waves (24 hits in total) and a Calamity Stance to break this thing, it's ridiculous! That's bad as it is but it gets even worse because 3 out of 5 of its attacks -Spin Thrust, Dark Laser and the unnamed headbutt- grant WP super armor until it's back to idle, so your hits don't even count towards breaking its Iron Stance. You can only do so when it uses the stomp attack and Curse. On the upside, the stomp is a free Flash Guard opportunity, might as well get a Retribution to use later on.
After getting past its massive Iron Stance, I use Obliteration Cross to follow up but there's the same issue as with Sonny: Phantom may be in cooldown because of the two back-to-back knockdowns. To be honest, it doesn't really matter too much. The combo breaks for a moment if Obliteration doesn't launch although I get the 200% multiplier back with Retribution anyway. But you know, the fight is cleaner if that doesn't happen.
Either way, afterwards I can briefly reminisce about how good Xillia 1's Swallow Fury was by using the tail hurtbox to continue the combo. This is the closest I'll get to the OG version...
Dragon's Maw is an Arte that, while it's not that great offensively (has low damage by Gaius' standards and a short timer), offers some interesting utility mid-combo that is showcased here. It can work as a pseudo-OTG since it grabs the enemy, however, the timing for this is extremely tight because WP recovers from knockdown somewhat fast, so Dragon's Maw must be inputted the moment Gaius lands. Any later, and it won't grab Phantom before the combo breaks.
In addition and aside from grabbing, Dragon's Maw can also work as a weakness reset as long as the enemy is weak to either Fire or Wind since it hits those two elements at once.
At this point you're probably wondering why there's a KO'ed Muzét, right? Well, the truth is that she's the MVP of this fight. Gaius has a skill called Crisis Boost that increases his base stats by 15% for each KO'ed party member, up to 45% if he's the last one standing. This small increase is enough to defeat Waterfall Phatom, otherwise I would be ~10k points short of damage.
This is how the relevant stats are affected:
- P Atk: 1428 → 1540 → 2063 (with Savage Beckoning active)
- Str: 565 → 630
- Vit: 595 → 664
- Dex: 422 → 477
Crisis Boost will prove to be very useful during the run to meet certain Str and damage thresholds.
