The Top Relationship Killer: When A Personality Disorder Dominates!
Not all relationships are "bad" because of a personality disorder that a partner, friend, or family member may display.
However, cluster A and B personality disorders can be very difficult to grow up under, create a life with, or maintain a relationship with.
A few reasons why personality disorders can be difficult in relationships is:
1. Chronicity: personality disorders (borderline, narcissistic, paranoid, etc) can interfere with the smooth flow of the connection. Jealousy, competition, anger, cheating, deceipt, and control among many other things can dominate the relationship for years.
Pervasiveness: becoming a narcissist, for example, is a long process that is influenced by a lot of experiences since birth. The behavioral patterns and mindset of the narcissist is longterm and longstanding. It isn't easy to stop this long-term pattern of existing in the world.
3. Difficult ("stubborn" traits): some personality disorders are able to be treated, but the majority are not. Cluster A and B personality disorders are complicated and may last a lifetime.
