Will Updating To WiFi 7 Fix PlayStation Portal Connectivity Issues?
When we bought our house several years ago, I installed a mesh Wi-Fi system. I figured it would be the best for our purposes since we would have three total floors. The system has worked very well for me since I installed it, however, the manufacturer no longer provides any firmware updates, it's only Wi-Fi 5, and routers only last so long before they stop working. More recently, I have discovered issues with the PlayStation portal being super laggy and having very poor performance. as such I decided to step up my wireless router game with a Wi-Fi 7 enabled TP-Link unit. Let's take a look and see if this is something that could fix the connectivity issues with the PlayStation Portal.
One thing just to make you aware of is the fact I did actually sell my PlayStation portal late in 2024. for me to be able to do any further testing on it I will have to purchase another one. however, one thing I can do to similarly test my performance is simply attempt to utilize Remote Play from my PlayStation 5 to either my phone or my PlayStation 4. in the past it has not worked very well, but we shall see with this new setup. I am also hopeful that, with this new setup, getting games downloaded to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will be faster as well.
What I ended up buying was the TP-Link Deco BE3600 Dual-Band WiFi 7 Mesh System through my local Best Buy. I went this route as the system was on sale for $30 off at $199.99, plus I had a $25 rewards card. Some of the features include:
WiFi 7:
Offering accelerated throughput, lower latency, stronger anti-jamming and higher efficiency, this is the latest architecture available.
Lightning-Fast Tri-band WiFi up to 3.6 GBPS:
Enables your devices to run at full speeds up to 2882 Mbps on 5GHz Band and 688 Mbps on 2.4GHz. This means that I should be able to stream up to 8K content, or more realisticlly, handle gaming without delays, improve the connection status, and hopefully be able to play the PlayStation Portal without issue.
6500 Square Foot Range
While my home isn't that large, this range will let me connect to devices outside, including projectors to stream on movie nights. It should also have less of an issue going through levels of my home too.
This is a more entry-level WiFi 7 router, but it's still WiFi 7! Stay tuned as we gear up for our unboxing and testing.
