Unlock Super Jump Ability In Capcom's Mega Man or Rock Man 3 On NES!
While Konami gets much of the credit when it comes to hacks and codes for NES Games, Capcom was sneaky and also placed different cheats, hacks, and unlocks behind different codes. While unlocking levels in the Mega Man or Rock Man games is nothing new, I did just happen to find a new (to me) way to unlock a super jump ability in Mega Man 3 and Rock Man 3 on Famicom or NES. This should also work on the Mega Man collections out there as well.
Unless you've been living under a rock, man (bad pun I know), Mega Man 3, known in Japan as Rockman 3: Dr. Wily no Saigo!? (ロックマン3 Dr.ワイリーの最期!?, "Rockman 3: The End of Dr. Wily!?"), is the third installment in the classic Mega Man series, developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was originally released in Japan in September 1990, followed by a North American release in November 1990 and a European release in 1992.
I used an original Mega Man 3 cartridge in my HDMI-modded NES Toploader to test out this trick. For controllers, I used a Retro-bit Origin8 Wireless Controller for Player 1, and a Retro Fighters Jab Pad in Controller Port 2.
The trick here is to help Mega Man jump higher without the use of Rush. To do so, I thought initially you simply held right on the D-Pad on Controller 2 on the main menu, and it would automatically unlock the cheat for you permanently. That's not quite how it works. You need to be pressing right on Player 2's D-Pad every time you want to execute this higher jump! This makes this trick less practical and less of something you can use throughout the game and more of something you would use on a per-need basis.
Did you know about this trick in Mega Man 3? Which of the original 6 Mega Man or Rock Man games was your favorite and why? Share your thoughts in the comments.
