3 Super Mario Games Great For Beginners (& 1 To Avoid) On Switch
One of the things I have really enjoyed as I get older with video games is sharing my favorites with my kids and seeing them experience things for the first time. Both my my kids have gotten to know and developed an appreciation for Nintendo and Super Mario, and it got me thinking about which Super Mario Bros games would I recommend to people to introduce their kids to the series. Let's take a look at 3 Super Mario Games I think are great for beginners and kids, and 1 I think you should avoid, at least initially. Best of all, these are all available on Nintendo Switch & the Switch Online service.
Super Mario Odyssey
I cannot say enough great things about this game, it is beyond amazing! I love the music, the immersive worlds, the characters, the puzzles, this is just fantastic. Add in the super cute and super sweet character of Cappy and you have a great entry into the Mario Series that is just a ton of fun to play.
Super Mario Bros 2/Super Mario Bros USA
Truth be told, out of the original 3 Super Mario Bros games the first is my least favorite. I know, sacrilege. But even though it started life as Doki Doki Panic it is one of the best Mario games ever made. It is a definite improvement stylistically and graphically over the original, it has 4 characters you can play as, the music is some of the best ever in a Mario Game, and it's just great. Even though there haven't been many since, I do wish we'd get more Mario Games where Bowser or the Koopalings weren't the main adversary.
Avoid:
Super Mario 64
While Super Mario 64 is the basis for Mario Odyssey, and Odyssey has even been called a true sequel to Mario 64, I don't think the game has aged well graphically or in terms of gameplay. Younger kids may not understand how the camera works and, to be honest, the camera kinda sucks. The N64 controller is also not great for kids with smaller hands either. I think Mario 64 is an OK game, but I think the learning curve is higher than the average kiddo will have patience for.
Definitely Must Play:
Super Mario World and Super Mario World + Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario World is such an amazing title, it's my favorite game of all-time. You get some of the best music ever, spooky yet not scary levels with the ghost houses, and who doesn't love Yoshi? Combine this with the All-Stars cartridge which adds in the best remasters that Nintendo has ever done with Super Mario Bros 1, 2, The Lost Levels, and 3 in Super Mario World Graphics and you have arguably the best cartridge ever produced.
What do you think of my list? What Mario games would you recommend for beginners? Let me know in the comments!
