How Can I Criticize The Nintendo Switch 2 When I Pre-ordered One?!?
The internet can be a funny place. In one instance you can say whatever you want and people shouldn’t be allowed to criticize you. In the next instance you are told that you can’t hold certain opinions because you have other opinions. For example, being from Wisconsin many people don’t understand how I love the Milwaukee Brewers and yet despise the Green Bay Packers and I don’t drink. Along that same line of thought, many have commented here on different videos that I have posted recently about the Nintendo Switch 2, claiming that I can’t both be excited for the launch and glad I have a pre-order locked in while still finding fault with the system. I don’t understand this thought process, but at the same time I am going to try to explain where I am coming from.
To put this out there, I am very much looking forward to the Nintendo Switch 2, I have very high hopes for it. That being said, it is not a system without flaws or a strategy I completely agree with. Some of the things I don’t like include things such as the high price of the system and games, the lack of Hall effect sensors, the fact the screen isn’t OLED, and more. There’s things Nintendo has claimed regarding the reasons behind these choices that contradict other things or just don’t make sense.
The Price
We all know Nintendo doesn’t lose money on hardware, unlike Sony and Microsoft who often use the consoles themselves as loss-leaders and make it up on the software and services side. Not so with Nintendo as they are making a profit on everything! The price of the system being this high has been blamed on tariffs, even before they were rolled out. And those were only from the US, not world-wide. I think Nintendo is leveraging the tariff controversy as an excuse to have a higher system cost outside of Japan. Sadly, for people like me, I’m going to buy the system and games, but that doesn’t mean I agree with the strategy or approve of it.
Non Hall Effect Sensors
The reason I have seen as to why Hall Effect sensors weren’t used in the Joy-Con 2 controllers is due the the magnets used to attach them to the system could have caused an issue. This may very well be the case, but then this is an admission that they solved one issue, joy-con wobble on the system, and ignored a bigger issue with Joy-Con Drift. I think they prioritized the wrong fix, and they could have addressed both in a better way.
Non-OLED Display
I rarely play in handheld mode, so for me this is a non-issue for the most part. But going from LCD to OLED and back to LCD seems bizarre to me. The OLED display is beautiful, and I am disappointed that the Switch 2 doesn’t have one.
I Kinda Need To Get One
If not for the existence of this channel, I would not likely be buying a Switch 2 at launch. But I do more than just play games with my equipment, I use it to create content for all of you! As such I feel obligated to purchase a system ASAP and start creating content with it. I already have a month’s worth of content outlined that I plan to create right after launch. But for this channel, for this audience, I need one.
Make sure you check out RetroFuzionGaming, he has a unique perspective on this that, while I don’t agree with, I can understand his points and see how he came to his conclusion. While I have been disappointed about certain things regarding the Switch 2, I have never been, nor have I conveyed, outrage. Have others? Sure. But I think there’s a place for open discussions and critiques, even on things you’re excited about and love.
