Switch & XBOX Bluey The Video Game For Young Kids Doesn't Play Well
When it comes time to get kids into video games, there's a way to do it that kids can have fun with age-appropriate content while still not being too hard or too easy. OG, Original Games, makes a number of licensed games, such as Peppa Pig, The Grinch, and, of course, Bluey: The Video Game. I think the game is super cute; it feels like you're playing several episodes of the TV show, but the problem is the play control. See, as good as it looks and sounds, it just doesn't play well. Let's take a closer look.
Bluey: The Videogame on Nintendo Switch offers a delightful and interactive way for young fans (and their families) to immerse themselves in the playful world of Bluey and her adventures. It has all the elements of the TV show, from the amazing voice cast, wonderful story and charm, and of course the fact it pulls gamers of all ages into episodes of the TV show. The game encourages exploration, allowing players to discover items to add to their sticker book, unlock outfits, and uncover secrets and hidden references within each location.
One of the things about the Bluey Video Game is that you have to interact with the environment in many scenarios. In some levels, you have to move a baby stroller, a table, a bench, a number of things. The problem is that, even with an on-screen prompt telling you to hit a specific button, it doesn't work. Like you can be standing right on the circle where the game is telling you to stand, and it doesn't do anything for you.
It doesn't matter if you're playing as Bandit, Chili, Bingo, or even Bluey, it has the exact same issue. I've had to help my daughter several times as she's gotten stuck because the detection of the game just isn't great. Moving objects, picking things up, grabbing items, its just not a great experience. And for this sort of audience, something for kids of under 10 years old, it just needs to work. If it doesn't, it just leads to unnecessary frustration.
This is unfortunate, as there's a definite charm to Bluey: the Video Game, but it falls flat at its core as a good video game, especially one designed for young kids. Let me know what you think, if you're a fan of Bluey, If you have played the game on the Switch, PlayStation 5, or the Xbox (It's free on Game Pass).
