#692 Tekken 3 (ARC) Unplayable Characters (1/2): Jun playthrough.
A playthrough of the unplayable character "Jun" in the arcade version of Namco's Tekken 3.
The oddity to end all oddities. Jun's unfinished inclusion is...perplexing. It's a mystery as to why she has leftover data in the first place, considering Jin seems to have always been meant to be the protagonist of Tekken 3. Most of Jun's data is just soundbytes borrowed from Tekken 2, with her model being Nina's and her moveset being Jin's. So why, therefore, was she being implemented in the game? I have two theories:
1. Early in development, they hadn't decided on the character of Jin. With Jin not a full-fledged concept yet, Jun was to return as the protagonist of Tekken 3, before they decided to make it into a soft reboot.
2. Jun was (and I suspect this is more likely the case) meant to be a special bonus character-costume for Jin as Anna is for Nina, with her own unique model but utilising Jin's moveset and recycled sound clips from Tekken 2. She was supposed to be a bonus, but due to time constraints was scrapped and instead replaced with Jin's school uniform has his hidden bonus costume.
The most fascinating thing about this whole thing, of course, is that she has her own unique character icon. For the other unplayable characters we'll see in both the arcade version of PS1 port of this game, they all have the exact same generic blank character thumbnail. Jun, on the other hand, has her own unique Tekken 3-style thumbnail, which I won't deny pretty sure made my heart skip a beat when I saw it for the first time. Seeing something new in Tekken 3, a game I'd been playing for years and thought I knew everything about, was just so strange.
Anyhow, I would have liked to have seen Best Girl included in Tekken 3 (or any other future canon Tekken game for that matter), but alas, it was not to be. I wish her moveset was actually intact here, but Jin's is a decent substitute regardless. Probably the single most interesting oddity we'll see when it comes to the Tekken franchise, so in terms of mysteries it's all downhill from here. Which is okay, as least from Tag onwards the bosses get more interesting, if not necessarily good.
Next time, an unused character who's backstory has actually been explained. See you then.
