A Second Before Us starts of rather ominous with the sounds of alarms and news reports blaring over a black screen. Clearly, something catastrophic happened in the world. But now we awaken in a future compound known as Stage 12 in the Delta complex. It's the only remaining center of civilization. However it holds a secondary purpose: to collect knowledge and information to store away for future generations. Colonists responsible for gathering this information, such as myself, are subject to memory wipes so that Delta can control what information is presented to the future.
In my sleeping quarters, I examine multiple items to discover I'm only known as #183. I have no other name. A voice on the intercom instructs me to get dressed and proceed to the simulation. It's now when the real fun begins as I step outside my quarters and see Stage 12 in all it's futuristic beauty. As I travel through the complex, I find numerous notes left by an unknown colonist. They tell the stories of his attempts to uncover the truth of Delta. At the risk of having his memory erased, this mysterious hero has perhaps left clues behind to aide me in the journey through the simulation.
The simulation leads to a lighthouse on an old market compound from the past. Remnants of slavery and torture phase in and out of the simulation. Innocent, this place is not. By reading the notes in the simulation, I not only get an understanding of the backstory, but items mentioned in the notes play an important role in solving puzzles in order to progress forward.
