I've been lucky enough to get an early sneak peek into Planet Nomads, a new survival-adventure indie game coming soon on Steam for PC! Thanks to Daniel and the Craneballs team for granting me the opportunity to share this footage with you in anticipation for the early access launch in April 2017.
First up, let's take a look at how base building works in creative mode to get a feel of the land and the functionality that it might take to survive in the real world survival mode. This is a very early alpha cut of the game so bugs and optimization will be improved as development continues.
Crash landed on an alien planet, I quickly explore the general area to see what kind of terrain and flora I'll be dealing with during my encounter with creative mode. The sleep pod chamber was my only form of shelter when I crashed. Sleeping allows me to replenish my health while also progressing the day forward. Day and night cycles change before your eyes as time passes on.
For the base building itself, I can simply enter the Building Blocks menu and select materials to craft with from a handful of menus including: Interior, Energy, Utility, and Basic. There's even a Favorites section to store some of my most used crafting items. Interior items include objects like ceiling lights, stairs, railings, walls, and more! From energy menu, select from bio generators, uranium generators, and a compact battery to power various gadgets of the base. Your utility menu contains items needed to create or transfer energy and electricity around the base such as conveyors, solar beacons, 3D printers. Finally, the basics menu houses the items needed to build the support and structures of your base, such as a foundation, walls of various widths, windows, doors, ceilings, you name it!
Building the base seems simply enough as you're allowed the freedom to place objects anywhere there is free and unobstructed space. Some objects automatically snap to the grid to assist in building even and symmetrical structures. Simply drag and drop building materials from the building blocks menu down into the quick bar to switch between commonly used items at the press of a button.
The clear obstructions such as trees, rocks, and even the terrain itself, I can use my gun to blast away various items to clear up space or reshape the land. The flashlight works wonders at night, allowing for an easier night build without having to sleep the hours away. I can switch between first person and third person mode, whichever is the preferred player experience.
The soft and relaxing background music provides the right amount of ambiance to remind one that they're on a sci-fi adventure.
This just the beginning of a new base as I begin my Planet Nomads journey. Stay tuned for more to come!
