One of the fun things with dotMod with Cold Waters you can make your own scenarios. Last time, we tried 688(I) vs. Wolfpack mission, and 688(I) did take some damage, but managed to kill almost everyone. Can Seawolf do better?

Mission editor setup: Group 1 of 8-10 Chinese subs (except the Xia SSBN) and Group 2 of 3-5 Russian subs (all of them), both aggressive. We're looking at 11-15 subs... Oh, and we're adding 1 ASW patrol bomber and 1 ASW helo.

I always load 1 decoy first.

------

The first thing I do is go as deep as possible, which in Seawolf means 450m or so. My heading is ESE, and all the contacts are to NE. Why not 550m? You can't launch torpedoes below 500m.

By now, you should be able to tell if it's a civilian surface vessel just by the engine noise. But in a scenario like this, you should use surface lockout setting on depth to make sure you don't hit a civilian ship by mistake.

We are quickly identifying the various contact, and form a plan of attack. I already have a general idea, but it will depend on a bit of luck to execute it.

We need about 10 miles of separation for the dogleg plan. The plan is to launch decoy north, then torpedoes north then northeast toward the enemies.

We got 7 torpedoes launched, but one wire broke, so it's going rogue. Once torpedoes went about 4-5 km north, I'll turn them E or ENE.

We have a whole passel of subs to my northeast, and when my torpedo started appearing on their flank, they'll go nuts. That'll cause more subs to go nuts, which is what we want: maximum confusion. The more they go nuts, the better I can hear them.

First two torpedoes are allocated to the Akula and Song, who is the closest. Then we have 3 Mings, a Romeo, an Alfa, and a Sierra. Behind them we have Kilo Improved, and Severodvinsk. We have more targets than torpedoes.

As the first torpedo activated (on passive), they are detected and the subs turned tail to them. One even made a snapshot, but I can't see the torpedo from my vantage point.

Akula was the first to die, but soon you have TEN subs fleeing from 5 torpedoes, some dropping noisemakers. Song died next. I tried to steer the remaining torpedoes onto Russian subs rather than Chinese subs as they are a bit more dangerous, but that doesn't always work. Soon, Romeo, Ming, and Han died. And Kilo Improved died further north. And that's the first salvo. 7 shots for 5 kills, not bad.

I quickly launched a second salvo of 4 torpedoes as I reloaded, with another 3 tubes ready. indeed, Song, Ming, Akula, and Alfa are heading south. I decided to leave north alone for now.

(In hindsight, I should have launched the 3 torps north now to have them in transit while I deal with this group)

The four torpedoes sought out different enemies but as they are distracted by decoys they lock onto a different target. Controlling 4 torpedoes together is NOT a simple task. But soon Alfa and Ming died, while Akula decided to go active and snapshot two torpedoes at SOMETHING while Song dodged the wrong way and died, but that was the wrong Song... Turns out there was yet another Song to northeast that ate the torpedo meant for the Song next to the Akula. That left one torpedo still chasing the Akula.

I salvoed my existing torpedoes (6x) (1 tube with decoy, 1 torpedo still active) and launched them east, with planned dogleg north. One of Akula's torpedoes almost caught Song. I allocated one torp for Akula and one for Song, and four still heading south.

The torpedo to Song caught it, beating Akula's torpedo, while my second torpedo to the Akula caught it beating the original that chased it for a while. I turned that torpedo northward, as well as the next one which no longer has a target. The other 3 were turned NWN for Ming, Song, and possibly Severodvinsk.

By this time, I am down to 3 torpedoes, 2 are in the tubes.

One of the torpedoes that went north caught a Song. The other two circled a Ming but can't get a hit as they kept locking onto dead ships, decoys, and so on. I had to turn them back into a search pattern. By now, only the Ming and the Severodvinsk are on the map. I had two more torpedoes coming from the south, but one ran out of power. The other managed to chase down the Severodvinsk.

That leaves 2 active torpedoes against 2 subs: the Ming and the final Severodvinsk. Neither torpedos have much juice left. Ming fired toward something, not sure what. My two torpedoes tried to hunt them down, but they proved to be elusive. Both torpedoes were down to their final 2 minutes of power, when they finally caught their targets, and both subs were destroyed.

With no more contacts on the map, and only 3 torpedoes remaining, I disengaged.

------

Woohoo! Thirteen kills, no damage. Clean sweep! Seawolf is one dangerous sub!
