(CCPlays) Cold Waters (Dot Mod): Soviet Svedlov CL vs NATO Convoy V2.0 (Custom Mission 1984)
0One of the fun things with dotMod is you can play anybody! This time, we decided to "improve" upon the setup of a Soviet Svedlov CL gun cruiser raiding a NATO convoy with a few DDs and FFs as escorts.
First attempt was mixing the civilian merchants and the escorts in the same group, which I don't think worked that well.
Mission editor setup: North Atlantic All, Group 1 has 2-3 ships composed of all the NATO FFs and DDs except Arleigh Burke Flight II (too new). Group 2 has 2-4 of all the neutral merchants.
I am driving the Soviet Svedlov light cruiser, which is armed with 12 152mm naval cannons. Individually, they are a little larger than the 5 inch guns on the NATO ships. And this one has 12 of them... But I will have NO missiles, not even for air defense.

Contacts to the southwest. Radar and ESM on. Our course is S.
We got a bunch of launch transients from southwest, and there comes all the ASMs, both Harpoons and Standards used as light ASM. We got ready on the chaff. I usually launch chaff just as the CIWS open up, or just a hair before that, as the alarm blares.
One missile somehow got through and got grazing hit, only 7% hull damage.
In the meanwhile, my forward gun crew is busy pumping out shots 6 at a time at the nearest NATO escort as we have closed to roughly 28 km, and by this time we have identified a Gearing class DD and a Spruance class DD. Their 5-inch gun is on the front and only has a range of 22 km, so they are of no factor unless they want to turn around.
Initially, the Spruance was closest, so my gun crew concentrated on her, but later the Gearing decided to charge me. I ordered the gun crew to sink the Spruance before shifting targets. Soon both are on their way to the bottom.
As we continued flank speed ahead we soon spotted the convoy itself, 3 freighters going 16 kts in roughly arrow formation. I sank the closest one, only to realize there was a fast freighter ahead of them as well. No matter. We have plenty of ammo. And all were sunk but it did take a little while.
