(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | Y2K NATO Campaign | Part 17: Luckiest Escape Ever
Previously, in the Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, we are trying to make it through PLAN assets blocking me from entering the mission area to intercept a PLAN convoy.
WARNING: Extra long mission.
-----
26-SEP-00 We had to dodge a Ming that got a bit too curious, but we were able to evade it successfully.
26-SEP-00 Sonar reported that they detect what appears to be a convoy of multiple ships. We submerged in wait in less than 100m of water.
Sonar reported an "oil rig" to the north, and multiple vessels to the west. We soon IDed Chendu, 2 x Jianghu3, and at least one Qiongsha transport. There is a neutral merchant ahead of them. There may be ships behind the convoy, but I can't hear them in this noisy channel.
I had 4 TASMs loaded, along with 3 torpedoes and 1 decoy. I fired the 3 torpedoes at the 3 escorts, only to realize there's a Romeo hiding behind one of the escorts. I retargeted the fish for the furthest escort for the Romeo. That escort is making a run for it as is the transport. So the priority targets are the closest escort, Chengdu, and the Romeo, which had salvoed 3 torpedoes restricting my movement.
In the chaos, I failed to notice sonobuoys being dropped to the west, one as close as 2km.
Romeo died first, and Chengdu is doing the death dance. The remaining torpedo is heading for the Jianghu3 charging in from the north. The other Jianghu3 is nope-ing it out to the west along with the Qiongsha transport.
I turned south as I finally noticed the torpedo being dropped to the west.
Chengdu finally died, and I turned the last fish toward the charging Jianghu3, when sonar called out "torpedo in the water!" The patrol plane figured out where I am shooting from and dropped one on me and it was the golden BB, the one-in-a-million shot. The fish impacted us 10 seconds after hitting water.
Two compartments flooded immediately and the pumps are damaged. Third one is filling up fast, and the sub sank to the sandy bottom, in 114m of water.
Moments later, our final torpedo in the Jianghu3. Now I have NO torpedoes left, just 2 decoys and 4 TASMs. And I was bracketed by another sonobuoy merely 1 km away. But at least there are no enemies near me, except those pesky air assets that can still kill me with depth charges and/or torpedoes... and unlike Russian subs, we don't have anti-aircrafts missiles.
Powering the boat forward or reverse did not budge it from the bottom. We can scrape along the bottom at dead slow, but that's it. Not even Emergency Blow can budge the ship from the bottom with 3 compartments flooded, even though the pumps are repaired.
As ChEng tried to troubleshoot the why no air is getting through, we tried to scrape along the bottom toward the southeast.
We can feel the depth charges dropped from the patrol plane or the helo. Doesn't matter. They are close, very close. Less than a boat length away.
We got a weird report, flooding in the torpedo room, but there was no flooding there. Then suddenly, high pressure air started flowing and all three departments started to drain water, and the boat started to rise.
I ordered all ahead half, and told the planesman to keep us from broaching. I asked sonar how far is the escort, as it had turned back toward us when it heard that its comrades sank. Best guesstimate is within 10 km, well within its gun range.
I really want to stay at 50m, but there is still a mission to do. As we headed southeast at our best speed, which increased as the planesman got used to the controls. I ordered 15 m depth, as it's time to get rid of the TASMs. When we went above 20m, I ordered all four TASMs in a single salvo toward the last known direction of the transport(s), with a slight spread. Hopefully, they'll nail one or two transports.
Once that's done, we went back under 30m and went all ahead flank and continue to flee southeast. We also fired a MOSS decoy to southwest toward some of the sonobuoys to confuse them. That worked temporarily, but it seems the patrol plane is dogging us, and so was that darn escort, as we steadily opened the range.
Finally, as we reached deep waters, both gave up, and we left the scene, battered, but alive. There was a huge hole in the hull, but the pressure hull held. And surprisingly, the TASMs killed the transports. The mission was considered a success, as we transited back to Guam without further incident.
