(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | Y2K NATO Campaign | Part 18: Revenge of the Seawolf
Previously, in the Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, we had destroyed a PLAN convoy, gotten sunk (sort of), avoided an air attack, saved the crippled submarine, and survived to return to Guam.
-----
27-SEP-00 We've docked at Guam and the dock workers are doing their best to patch up the hole left by the Chinese torpedo. It'll take many hours, even if they are working around the clock. In the meanwhile, we have received our new priority mission.
MISSION: Intercept Russian submarines that were just sold to the PLAN, which will likely travel through Sea of Japan toward the Paracel islands. Expect to see Victor IIIs and Akulas.
The reloads took longer than the repairs, it turned out, as I had fired off EVERYTHING in the previous sortie. But we are underway in mere 38 hours. Given the late start, I elected to head directly to the Paracel Islands, which is just southeast of Hainan and Gulf of Tonkin.
30-SEP-00 We arrived at the Paracels and sonar reported possible subs ahead. We are in deep waters, but not too far from the PLAN base. Sonar reported multiple pings from contacts to Southeast. Assuming they are modern subs, they have detected us already.
I immediately ordered snapshot tubes 5 and 6, as well as the MOSS decoy in tube 4 (priority reload) to the southwest, as I turned away to northeast, and sonar called out torpedo in the water. Sierra had dropped a Vyuga SUBROC near me in seconds, followed by a conventional fish. Fortunately, some judicious turns at 15 kts, and 4 noisemakers sent the torps to go after the MOSS decoy heading away instead, and I still have full wire control of both torpedoes which located the 2 Sierra subs and another unknown. I snapshot another torpedo for this unknown contact.
The decoy attracted no less than SIX torpedoes, and during the melee I realized I'm up against the trio of Victor III, Akula, and Sierra. Akula died from my torpedo by now, and Sierra rushed toward my decoy, and didn't react in time to my torpedo pushing past the decoy and homed in on it. It died. A third torpedo went after Victor, which made the unfortunate decision to turn away and depart the area, so it never even heard the passive torpedo that came up its baffles.
Mission complete!
And the war continues...
