(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | Y2K NATO Campaign | Part 25 : Clean Sweep the Invasion Convoy
Previously, in the Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, we had just dropped off a SEAL team on Hainan island in China.
We made it out of shallow waters around Yulin and was ordered back to Guam to rearm.
10-OCT-00 Arrived at Guam for reloads, and a new priority mission.
MISSION: Destroy PLAN Amphibious force intending to land on Spratly Islands.
We loaded 4 TASMs, 7 MOSS decoys, and 37 torpedoes (including those in the tubes).
12-OCT-00 We managed to arrive at the Spratlys without encountering anyone. We setup to wait. Sonar quickly IDed multiple ships coming in from northeast: Chengdu FF, Jianghu FF, Luda III DD, 2 x Yukan LST, and Yuting LST.
When they get to 30 km, we've IDed their formation: the 3 LSTs in a column, Chengdu leading, Jianghu on the right and Luda on the left.
We went down to 244 ft and decided to launch 3 torpedoes left and 3 torpedoes right, for a pincer movement. Unfortunately, I forgot to check terrain, as the 3 going north ended up burying themselves into the sea bottom.
I quickly ordered the remaining 3 running activated so they will zoom toward the surface for shallow attack, avoiding any terrain. Sent tube 8 out with same instructions, while quickly reloading tubes 2, 3, and 4. (1 has the decoy).
We also detected a Kilo in front of the formation with 5 torpedoes on the way. We were at 61 m so we can save the range on these fish (sending them un-activated, i.e. transit speed rather than attack speed), and we quickly launched the two reloaded torpedoes in the tubes at them at 61 m, then sank back to 220m to direct the chaos that will be caused multiple incoming torpedoes.
The Kilo died first, but it actually managed to counterlaunch a torpedo before getting hit. But due to the dogleg path it never came close to us. And with some judicious remote control of torpedos, every ship in front got its own torpedo, leaving just the Luda DD and Yuting (the rearmost LST) running, and the last two torpedoes chasing. Yuting did try to run, but you can't outrun a torpedo with only 18 kts. Both it and the Luda went down. It's a clean sweep.
And the war continues...
