(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | Y2K NATO Campaign | Part 26: Killing Kirov and Kiev Kompletely
Previously, in the Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, we had just wiped out a PLAN invasion fleet for the Spratlys with its escorts (and a surprise escorting sub as well).
12-OCT-00 Received new priority orders
MISSION: Russians sold PLAN some of the big ships, and they are coming through Sea of Japan for the Philippines. Wipe them out
We immediately dashed northeast through the Taiwan / Luzon gap, north past Okinawa, through the Tsushima Strait, and arrived in the Sea of Japan, which has the deep waters we need, even as the satellites spotted the battlegroup. We planned an intercept.
14-OCT-00 We intercepted the enemy battle group in Sea of Japan. No layers or ducts, but water is plenty deep here.
There's a whole passel of contacts to the east, including ASW helos. Sonar quickly IDed 2 x Victor IIIs, Kirov, Kiev, Udaloy, and a few more ships in the back. I was about to wait for firmer ID, but a launch transient from a Victor III forced my hand: it had probably launched a Vyuga SUBROC, which means a torpedo is on the way. I immediately popped the MOSS decoy toward the enemy fleet, followed by 7 torpedoes, while I dove for test depth at 15 kts, keeping the wire intact. Fortunately, all enemy torpedoes followed the decoy. I will allocate my torpedos with priority on the two Victor IIIs, then Kiev and Kirov.
The northern Victor III launched again (conventional torpedoes this time), and I decided to send another MOSS decoy toward her while I evade to the south at 15 kts to retain the wires on the torpedoes I launched.
The northern Victor III died first, then I had to cut the wires to all torpedoes and evade as a torpedo is getting too close. Udaloy died next, then the southern Victor III.
Then Kirov took a hit or two and sank. Then a Chilikin sank from a torpedo hit. Not sure what happened to the Kiev.
A Kara was rushing toward me, even as I am chasing after the Kiev. I slowed down to full and fired a torpedo toward it, then cut the wire and resumed flank ahead. After sprinting for 4 minutes, we slowed to 10 kts and heard the torpedo impacting the Kara, sinking her. Now, it's only the Kiev, and maybe one other transport. Kiev did manage to pop a torpedo at me, but I turned away from it, and resumed pursuit. It appears Kiev was damaged and is only doing 18 kts. In fact, when I closed in to 15 km, it had slowed to 9 kts. I fired a torpedo north toward the Chilikin to north, and another torpedo to finish off the Kiev when Sonar IDed the ship north as a merchant. So I turned both torpedoes toward the Kiev. Soon, double explosions, and breakup sounds. Kiev is no more. The entire battlegroup had been wiped out. Clean sweep!
Got a Navy Cross for this.
But the war continues...
