Check Out These Must-Play Game Boy Games!
So many people have been able to get into the world of retro gaming through modern hardware. Playstation Plus, Xbox Game Pass, and the Nintendo Switch Online Services all provide access to some of the best games from the past. Often, people who play these classics on new hardware end up wanting to go back and collect and play games on the original systems. The Nintendo Game Boy is well represented on the Switch Online, but what are games you might want to play on an actual Game Boy? Let's check out these must-play Game Boy Games.
Super RC Pro AM
I love the original NES game along with the sequel, but there's a special place for me when it comes to Super RC Pro Am. It's weird that a "Super" titled game was on the Game Boy instead of being a Super Nintendo Game, but it's fantastic!
Super Mario Land 2
I know the original broke new ground, and I also know that Super Mario Land 2 is available on the Switch Online Service, but this game is so much better than the original. The controls are much tighter, the graphics and gameplay are superior, it's as if this were the love child between Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World.
DuckTales 2
On the NES, DuckTales 2 is crazy expensive, but on the Game Boy, it's pretty reasonably priced. The game is very similar to the NES version as well, but to be honest the original game is actually the better title. That being said you can enjoy this game, which is still very good, for less on the Game Boy.
Japanese Games
Did you know the Game Boy is actually region-free and can play imported Japanese games? It is true! This is why I purchase games from Japan Retro Direct, the games are less expensive and they provide an amazing service at a reasonable price.
Bonk's Adventure/ GB Genjin (GB原人)
This is the first Bonk game on the Game Boy. Not a straight port of the PC Engine version. It's really its own game and its a fantastic game. You get to play as Bonk on the Game Boy in something that feels like it is from the same universe while being it's own entity. I cannot recommend this or any of Bonk's games highly enough.
Takahashi Meijin no Boukenjima II
Takahashi Meijin no Boukenjima II is the original Japanese name for the second Adventure Island game on the NES, and a version of it was also released on the Game Boy with a slightly different title in Japan. Where the original NES Adventure Island was based on Sega's Wonder Boy, this game is totally new from the ground up. Much like Bonk, Adventure Island feels familiar yet new at the same time, and it's a great game to have in your collection.
