Breath of Fire (GBA) Playthrough Part 5 - The Stone Robot
The problem plaguing back in Romero was never quite resolved so it makes sense that the crew would return story-wise. With the Wizard's potion out of commission, the zombies lose their remaining humanity and now actively hunt the night in the town. The poor livestock... but nice George Romero reference.
We come across... Dr. Wily?! Uh... yes apparently by helping... him, he'll assist the crew in getting into the floating citadel, Agua.
The Water Jar (Wtrjr) can be, and probably is a recommended approach, refilled and when used, will act as healing fountain water, but only once, after that, it needs to be refilled again in the cave.
There are plenty of revisits to Agua due to the treasures lying around, so keep that in mind. The enemies aren't really challenging and are probably less challenging than the ones back in the Ease Cave, namely the Ameblobs.
BOSS: Wisp [6:14]
This is the first boss without a second wind. He isn't difficult, but he does have an attack that hits the entire party. Bo's Fry spell makes short work of him. The more curious aspect of the battle comes when the boss sprite for some reason or other vanishes.
With the second Goddess Key, the King Key (KngKey) in hand, the crew can activate the Stone Robot... wait... why haven't the Dark Dragons gone after THIS instead of the Forest Clan's Ring? Clearly they can... nevermind. Unlike the Earth Key, the King Key will only take up inventory space in the long-run.
BOSS: General + 2 x Lancers [8:57]
This guy is back... and he still sucks. His 2 lackeys don't fare any better.
The Stone Robot cutscenes are redone, and look much better than the original. Before heading off to secure the Ring, make sure you get all the items in Tuntar AND ensure you have all the battle items, Magic Drops (M. Drop), and Meat in hand for the upcoming challenge. Buy a few sets of Acorns while you are at it, Bo will need them. If not Tuntar then Winlan or Romero. Go hunting if need be.
The Ring... really isn't all that special. Why are the Dark Dragons adamant on getting this rather than the King Key is beyond me. Another thing that bothers me is that ONLY Ryu can wear it, and being a treasured possession of the Forest Clan... shouldn't Bo be the more appropriate bearer of this heirloom? Really weird plot inconsistency. I originally thought the Ring was the wedding ring needed for Terry and Ameila's engagement ceremony. Tuntar is obliterated, and looks like the crew naively forgot to turn off the Stone Robot (it's like they parked their car and forgot to turn off the ignition).
BOSS: Gremlin [22:56]
The guy sucked before, but he clearly didn't like getting his ass handed to him... TWICE. This time he is pumped up and ready to kill. This is undoubtedly the most difficult boss fight in the game... circumstantially speaking. At low levels, this guy will pummel you badly. His most damaging and player-hated maneuver is his multi-breath attack that can shave off quite a lot, even more so during his second wind phase (since it is the ONLY god-damn attack he uses at that point). Keep everyone's HP stabilized, strengthen Bo's defense with Fort since he tends to take the most damage. Not just from his low defense, but I've also read that the WolfHT he's wearing, ACTUALLY increases a percentage of damage he receives... NOW WHAT THE HELL KIND OF ARMOR IS THAT?! Another illogical design choice and thanks for the NON-EXISTENT item description, and there are more armor along the way that do the same. Anyways... Ryu can focus on attacking, Bo's Fry spell is key to ending the battle quickly because this guy has A LOT of HP. So it is important to recover his AP using Acorns when possible, use attack items like a Bolt Stone (B. Stn) and others you may have saved up to this point because this boss is the most deserving recipient of them. Nina should act as support, during the second wind phase, it'll be a death wish if you decide to make her go offensive. Keep note that her healing and support spells ALWAYS act before everyone else as opposed to item usage. If 2 team members fall, especially during the second wind phase, consider it impossible to revive them and effectively a game over. If you can get past this guy relatively unphased, the remaining bosses later on should be nothing.
Some players suggest leveling up in the region beyond Karma for this boss battle alone. That is actually a really bad idea, since the enemies there are way out of league for your characters AND their equipment. Ryu's crew won't last 1 turn against those enemies from the Gust region.
With the General FINALLY subdued for good, the Stone Robot exhibits more sentience and sacrifices himself to contain his power and allowing Ryu and comrades to journey onward. Marking the arrival of a new world map BGM.
