Darkwing Duck (NES) Playthrough Part 1 - Quackerjack, Liquidator, and Wolfduck
One of the many collaborations of Disney and Capcom, and a fine example of how TV-based games should be made. It's too bad we don't see as much Disney-based Capcom games like the old days because both companies worked remarkably well with one another.
Going for a more Mega Man style gameplay rather than the kung fu moves he exercises in the TV series, his gas gun is used way more than most episodes combined. Following suit of Mega Man is the different power up gas guns that use energy, replenishable via pick-ups:
Heavy Gas: stronger gas pellets, uses 1 gas energy
Thunder Gas: shoots 2 diagonal gas pellets, uses 2 gas energy
Arrow Gas: the most useful, stronger gas pellets and can attach to walls to form a latchable ledge, uses 3 gas energy
Whereas Scrooge McDuck made a very impressionable game mechanic of utilizing his cane to pogo jump and golf swing objects, Darkwing's ability to latch onto objects and ledges in addition to his shield cape are things I remember most of this game's uniqueness. The latter ability actually took me a while to figure out.
Despite being a spinoff series of the more successful DuckTales, Darkwing Duck was a very enjoyable series on its own merit. Breeding Disney's own interpretation of existing super hero genres and pop culture, most notably Batman. The show spanned almost as long as DuckTales itself. If not for the success, and the Double-O-Duck and The Masked Mallard episodes, Darkwing Duck might never have come to fruition. One thing I never understood was that no villain really thought to ambush Launchpad despite multiple people seeing him as Darkwing's sidekick and knowing full well that he is aware of Darkwing's true identity. I mean, it's not like he was in disguise like Robin was with Batman. It's minor nitpicking I know, but it's something that has bothered me for throughout the series as it progressed.
Quackerjack is the easiest boss in the game, Mr. Banana Brain has an easily exploitable blind spot, rendering the duck jester completely defenseless.
Liquidator can be a challenge if not handled properly, his homing fish should always be taken out before they start their move. Not very pleased to play a sewers level, but whatever; however, I came very close to losing, thankfully enemies do drop health kits pretty frequently.
Wolfduck is a completely original character introduced to the game, possibly inspired by a Ducktales character spoof of the Wolfman and from Darkwing's own unfortunate transformation into a werewolf duck by Morganna's father. He can be challenging due to his quick sprinting ability and quick box tosses.
As Darkwing puts it, Let's get dangerous...
