Breath of Fire (GBA) Playthrough Part 2 - Nanai and the Gaia Temple
Breath of Fire was one of the few games that employed the day-and-night system, something I think Capcom adopted from the Dragon Quest games, notably Dragon Quest 3. Our hero then gallantly sneaks into the Dark Dragon occupied town in the dead of nigh... I mean during the sunset... when soldiers are oddly asleep already (Perhaps they got a bit too carried away in the bar).
Not many people mention the top right-most house which CAN be entered to get 2xHerbs. They may have been deterred by the hidden soldier. The weapon shop here holds a few items of interest, notably the LongSD which will really help Ryu for sometime. In addition, there is the IronRP (although most may not realize on first play it is for Nina) which is Nina's most powerful weapon for a long portion of the game early on. It is certainly unfeasible to have accumulated so much gold on first visit, so the only way to get one or both is to grind in the Gaia Temple. The first floor of the dungeon is ill-advised due to the Poison Bug (P.Bug) encounters. The second floor has none and is better suited for gold grinding. At the same time, Ryu should've gained a few more levels for the upcoming battle. Use Herbs sparingly since this town has neither an item shop, inn, or healing fountain to use at leisure.
BOSS: Knight [4:55]
This guy's most dangerous attack is a Thunder Bolt (T. Bolt) spell that whallops exactly 20HP each time, so be sure to heal Ryu every time when his life starts to dip low. His other attacks include a sword attack that doesn't do as much and occasionally he heals himself. Other than that, the battle shouldn't drag for too long. Resist the urge to use any attack spell items picked up, because at this point, those aren't readily available in stores and there is a much more deserving recipient boss later on soon.
With the destruction and containment of the Earth Quake control in Nanai, Ryu acquires the first Goddess key (and the MOST useful), the Earth Key (E. Key). In battle, using it unleashes a magnitude 3.0 quake spell that inflicts exactly 30HP damage all enemies, EVEN ones flying.
Spells are an interesting aspect in this game, they almost never vary, regardless of how much magic defense (if such a stat actually even works in this game), it always deals an exact amount of damage. Sometimes magic spells can be halved or reduced by equipment you wear (WHICH I remind you is NEVER highlighted in any in-game descriptions whatsoever).
It is never quite explained what befell most of the citizens of Nanai, only one or two in Camlon admit to having fled from there. It might be just me, but the king in Camlon COULD be the king from Nanai, just from the way he talked to Ryu. But there obviously should've been 2 different kings, one likely was killed by either the invading Dark Dragons in Nanai OR the creatures that infested Camlon Castle... You know what, I'm digging too much into this, forget it. For the sake of simplicity, the king in Camlon, IS the king of that kingdom.
I'm going to refrain from dashing after this point, because with the frame rates I'm recording, the character looks like he/ she is sliding.
