No time to waste, there's a gate in Proto Dome to hit up!
Inside the dome are some Bugger mechs. One group of three and a group of four with the latter guarding an Enertron. While these fights can't be run from, it is possible to slip by the group of four.
Buggers are respectably bulky and possess a fairly damaging counter attack for any moves that don't finish one off. This includes moves that can hit multiple targets like Crono's Cyclone.
Up at the northern part of the dome, there's an inactive robot of sorts. Lucca can't help herself with wanting to fix anything mechanical related and immediately gets to work on the robot. While Lucca's doing the repairs, Marle notes the door in the back won't budge.
Once Lucca makes all of her repairs, she activates the robot. Sure enough, she's successful as the robot comes to life and greets the girls. When asked for his name, he responds with R66-Y. That won't do so the team decides on another one, Robo.
Guess what though? I'm not satisfied. A badass punching robot deserves the name of a certain maverick hunter for the bonking he's gonna dish out. Yup, he's being renamed to X!
Robo's curious as to what happened in the dome. Beforehand, there were more of his kind and humans around, suggesting something very bad happened here.
The main problem though is that locked door leading to the time gate. There's a solution at the Factory to the north, a generator that can be turned on to give the dome power. Robo wants to help out by coming along to get past the security. One person must stay behind though to activate the controls.
Either Lucca or Marle can stay behind for the run to the Factory. Marle comes along.
Now then, time to talk about the bonking maverick hunter Robo.
First off, Robo's downsides...he's as slow as Lucca. More concerning though is his awful magic defense.
As for his upsides? He's got very high hp, power, and stamina. That's not why he's really good in this hack though. He got buffed by being able to equip ANY weapon that isn't locked to Crono.
When you're ready, exit the dome and head north into the Factory.
At the entrance, Robo disables the first level of security, but it brings in an Acid to attack the party. High defenses, but Slash breaks through that nicely.
Past the conveyor belt on the right, you have two options for elevators to take. Take the one in the northwest to go down a level.
The next level has a save point you can use. To the north is a panel that can only be activated if you deal with the enemies in the area. Amusingly enough, you can run here. Examine the panel that's active after the fight to open the ladder leading down while grabbing the Shelter.
On the next floor, navigate to the central room where some lasers are setup. There's chests with a Titan Vest & a Hammer Arm inside as well as another security system. Once you disable it though, a random number of Acids & Alkaline drop in to attack.
After the fight, either take the elevator in the southeast and go down a level or take the ladder to the southwest. They'll lead to where the generator is, but the way inside requires a passcode. Enter in X, A, B, then Y to unlock the generator door.
After activating the generator, someone's NOT happy. Namely, the security system which goes into overdrive mode. We need to leave and fast, but all the elevators don't work so heading up by foot we go.
The problem? The team runs into some purple skinned versions of Robo on the way. Robo sees his friends and tries to go say hi, but all he gets is an ass kicking and taken out of commission for the next boss fight against six R Series robots.
This boss fight can actually be a little scary. Six targets means attacks that do only 20-30 damage can add up fast. They're not the most bulky enemies though as one hit from Marle with her Bolt Bow & Berserker can kill a bot if her attack goes critical.
Crono's job is to target a Cyclone at whatever row Marle's first shot lands. He then alternates between using Mid Tonics to heal and attacking until things calm down.
One thing to note...with two bots down, the rest gain a counter that hits all targets for 15-25 damage. With only one left? A counter that hits all targets for roughly 50 damage.
After the battle, Robo is brought back to Lucca for repairs. During the repairs, he's asked what his plans are. Once they're complete, he gives a simple answer...he's coming with the party. Works for me!
