Just a bit of grinding done off screen so I could have a stash of all the trading ingredients for the future.
Speaking of trading, there's six different pieces of equipment you can trade for. Four of those are weapons with only the Flint Edge for Crono having no special qualities to it. Marle's Ruby Bow and Lucca's Ruby Gun raise magic by 2 while the Ruby Arm for Robo raises magic defense by 5 (and don't forget he can equip the bow or gun if you want him hitting a bit harder with Laser Spin).
The other two pieces of equipment are an armor and a helm, both of which Ayla has equipped when she joins. The Rock Helm's nothing special, but the Ruby Vest has good defense on top of cutting fire damage by 50%.
That being said...the Forest Maze seems like it could be easy to get a bit lost in. Not too bad though if you follow the footsteps.
As for the enemies, there's a couple new ones in the Gold Eaglet & Winged Ape. The former can actually take a decent amount of punishment to the point where it'll turn red when getting low on health. This does give them a rather painful fire attack that can do 160+ damage without a Ruby Vest equipped.
As for the primate coming in hot, Winged Apes love tossing things around. Enemies, your party members, the works. The enemy tossing can potentially hit for a bit over 100 damage so it's something to watch out for.
Items in the Forest Maze are just some random consumables, nothing real special. On to the next dungeon!
The Reptite Lair is a small area, but with a rather annoying gimmick if you're hellbent on collecting every piece of treasure in the first half. The new enemies aren't too much to worry about, but the first enemy filled room in the dungeon has Evilweevils. Ramming into them for a fight's all fine and dandy, but leave them to their own devices and they can dig a hole down a level. Where they do it is completely random.
Once at the save point for this area, the next room to the north has the leader of the Reptite race, Azala. She (yes, it's a she) wastes no time demanding an answer out of the party regarding what the Gate Key does. You get a dialogue choice here, but either response is going to end up with Azala chickening out, calling in her pet two legged dinosaur buddy Nizbel to do battle in her place.
Nizbel's much like a majority of the enemies in this era...packing lots of physical defense, but is vulnerable to getting shocked via Lightning, leaving it a sitting duck to wail on. This doesn't last forever as Nizbel will unleash that built up electrical energy as an AoE on your team for 130-180 damage each, then regain its high defense barrier.
This fight's not too rough, especially considering Ayla & Robo's dual tech Spin Kick does a rather insane amount of damage for this point in the game. Just reapply Lightning to nerf Nizbel's defenses, then quickly heal up those who need it and continue on the assault.
After the fight, Azala pulls a stupid by never running off like an idiot while the team was busy with Nizbel. Azala has to pony up the Gate Key for this failure, but makes a remark that indicates she's not yet done with her bid at conquering the world.
The scene ends back at Ayla's house. She stays in her era for now as the team finally gets the precious Dreamstone needed to repair the Masamune.
