Chrono Trigger Minimum Battles (LLG) Part 6 - 86 Battles to Lavos
Now that we've completed all the sidequests, it's time to head to Black Omen and defeat Zeal. Our first major opponent is the Mega Mutant, who can be defeated with our endgame gear and traditional tactics. Equip Crono with the Wraith Band as his new weapon the Rainbow has a 70% critical hit chance, so any counterattack is likely to do huge damage. Meanwhile, just attack with Ice Sword and Rapid Fire Fist and have Robo heal when necessary.
The Giga Mutant is a much more powerful challenge. The Giga Mutant has the maximum physical defense, so any attacks that do physical damage, or double techs with a physical damage component will do very little damage. Do pure magic damage by using Lightning II, Ice II, and Proximity Bomb and we'll eventually destroy it.
The Tera Mutant continues to increase the difficulty as the top half of the mutant will heal itself by draining life from the bottom half. However, you only need to defeat the top to advance, so use Lightning I and Ice I instead to focus our damage. The Tera Mutant is out of range of Proximity Bomb so use Laser Spin when Robo isn't healing. Once the top portion is destroyed the bottom portion will automatically fall. The Tech Points awarded from this fight are enough to grant Marle Arise which unlocks this party's triple tech: Lifeline. Lifeline grants the whole party a one-time auto revive should they fall in battle, and is imperative in our strategy for the final battle, so we basically unlock this just in time.
The Eldar Lavos Shell is just a stronger version of the previous Lavos Shells found on Death Peak and the same strategy will work on him as well.
Finally, we face Zeal, a 3 part battle that is the hardest challenge we've faced so far. In her first form, Zeal frequently casts a spell that reduces the whole party to 1 HP, so Robo must be used heal afterwards. Meanwhile, a hasted Marle and Crono can continually attack with Ice Sword. In the 2nd form, we face the Mammon Machine which prompts us with the message "Modifies all energy", which signifies that attacks against the Mammon Machine will increase its power, physical attacks increase its defense and magic attacks increase its power. Don't attack until the Mammon Machine attacks with "Release Energy", instead use this time to heal up and use ethers. Immediately after this fight, we'll fight Zeal in her ultimate form, so we'll need to be ready with high HP and MP. When the prompt "Modifies all energy" appears again, wait until the next "release all energy" attack. In Zeals ultimate form, target the head with our ultimate attacks like Frenzy and Rapid Fire Punch. Zeal can output a huge ammount of damage so make sure to use the powerful healing dual tech Cure Wind to keep your party healthy.
Finally, we have the Lavos Outer Shell. In this fight Lavos takes the form of various bosses we've already faced. Once those are completed we face Lavos himself. Lavos attacks with powerful area of effect spells which can whipe out your whole party. Our best defense is to use our new triple tech lifeline. By using this tech we get some extra insurance against Lavos's powerful attacks allowing us to be more aggressive. Once this version of Lavo's is destroyed his core is revealed. Now all that we have left is the final chapter of the game!
