This video comprises one successful demo and one outtake for the challenge of completing Doom 2's Map 18 'The Courtyard' from a pistol start while scoring all monsters, items and secrets and sustaining no damage whatsoever. There is commentary throughout the video, mostly recorded live as I played.
Thanks again to Coincident for sharing my previous video, which saw my total subscribers jump by 50 per cent in just a few weeks. He also provided the Doom 2 logo for the thumbnail.
This map is one of my favourites in Doom 2, designed by Sandy Petersen. The day before I started recording attempts, I was grappling with many strategic options for how best to use the invulnerabilities. It was quite a breakthrough when I realised I could combine the two most difficult traps into one invuln. The hitscanners in the marble area cause some anxiety, but the excess of ammo in the level allowed me to have some fun with rockets at their expense!
Regrettably, I did not review my 2019 success at this challenge before I started recording attempts in 2022. So it was late in the video editing process that I realised that the old 2019 demo desynchs because of me using the wrong complevel in 2019 AND playing on the old unofficial version 1.666 of Doom 2. When submitting speedruns to the Doom Speed Demos Archive it is essential to use the correct version (1.9), but I like to use that version all the time now anyway. Coincident helped me figure these issues out in late 2021, when I accidentally submitted an invalid speedrun for Map 03 which desynched due to being recorded on version 1.666.
The web site I used to check my versions of Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 are correct is:

The correct checksum values are given at: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_files
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about this, or anything else about this or other No Damage challenges. I look forward to hearing from you!
