This video comprises mostly two outtakes and one successful demo for the challenge of scoring all monsters, items and secrets from a pistol start on Doom 2's Map 20 'Gotcha!', while taking no damage whatsoever --- a.k.a. 'No Damage Completion'. There is commentary throughout the video, mostly recorded live as I played.
Thanks to Coincident for the transparent Doom 2 logo in the thumbnail.
This map has a lot of sneaky tactics available for No Damage play --- I gave it 5 stars for difficulty back in 2019 mostly due to the trips across poison and awkward positioning of hitscanners. Everyone's favourite infight, between the Spider Mastermind and cyberdemon, is not terribly dangerous, although before the brick wall gives me cover there are a tricky few seconds when the spider can hurt me. Resetting is not annoying there because it's only just over a minute into the route.
The lost souls that unpredictably arrive at various times during the route tend to originate in the westerly building, where I later grab the BFG and tag three secrets. As if that isn't dangerous enough, an exploding Pain Elemental can give me even more girl trouble!
Back in 2019 when I 'completed' this challenge on the wrong complevel, I would snipe at the monsters in the southwest building with my first radiation suit, before heading for the supercharge and zig zag section as in 2022. Later, I would cautiously kill the chaingunners guarding the teleporter in the northerly building, which can easily go wrong, before grabbing the radiation suit, getting the BFG and dragging the last monster from the southwest building through the teleporter by standing in the blood on the other side, as shown in the outro of this video. In those days I wasn't straferunning, so my 2022 strategy didn't even arise as a possibility. I have considered firing the BFG as I go through the teleporter; however the positions of the monsters on the other side might vary too much for the tracers to be guaranteed to kill them.
I would have included the above points in the outro of the video, but it was several minutes long already and very hard work to edit! Let me know in the comments what you think of the 'reverse angle' footage from the southwest building, or any thoughts/questions you may have about tic counting, which was invaluable in making the trips across poison risk free (when I do the Maths correctly!). Tic counting was first introduced in my video of Doom 2's Map 29, available at:
