Never My Final Fantasy - Episode 8: Lavate Las Lavos

Well, it took an extra long stream but I actually managed to finish off Chrono Trigger in eight streams, despite KI and Dari's assessments that the last stream was disappointing in terms of progress. The thing is, I think I could've easily taken out Ozzie's Fortress last time looking at just how little time it took me in this stream. The other two sidequests, on the other hand, were doozies in their own respects. It was interesting to hear that KI actually managed to give up on the quest with Glenn and Cyrus just due to how convoluted it gets... and it does get convoluted.
As the night wore on, I made a proclamation. If I died, I would quit for the night. Otherwise, I'd just see the game out to its conclusion. And as it turns out, I might have been overleveled by the end after all... because I never really got sidetracked by any major roadblocks. The fact that the penultimate boss fight was essentially 4 bosses back-to-back -- without counting the fact that the last one was a boss rush in its own right -- did deter me from keeping my promise a bit... but not enough to stop me. In the end, I was victorious.
So yeah, as far as Square-developed turn-based JRPGs go, this game is clearly tops for me, beating out Final Fantasy IX -- though my experience is clearly limited. I can see why this game is so beloved, though I guess its proximity to FF7 is what made me so iffy in the first place. But having played it, I'm optimistic. After all, if the game I was dreading most out of the initial batch ended up being this good, who knows how good the rest of my line-up this year will be.
