Final Fantasy (NES) - Four RedMAGE Casual Playthrough (Part 3)
Game: Final Fantasy
Platform: NES
Completed: February 19, 2022
Rules: Beat the game with a team of four Red Mages. Promoting to Red Wizards is allowed.
Part: 3 of 6
Now that our team of four Red Mages have spent an ample amount of time gaining levels and buying all the useful things, it's time to find the crown in the Marsh Cave, obtain Matoya's crystal, pick up an herb to cure the prince of Elfland, gain a mystic key, have some stuff blown up with TNT, feed someone a delicious ruby, prevent the earth from rotting, receive a canoe, get turned to stone, and just walk straight into a volcano and step on all the magma!
Some highlights:
15 seconds - I just started and I didn't feel like dealing with being poisoned so I just reset the game.
9 minutes - Certain squares have forced battles that you can actually fight over and over by stepping on the square again. Here I demonstrate that.
1 hour, 4 minutes, 50 seconds - This hallway for some reason has a forced battle every step of the way that contains Giants and Iguanas. Not really sure why they did this since it leads nowhere but I thought I'd see if I could make it all the way through.
1 hour, 12 minutes, 30 seconds - Other than staying at an inn, the only way to replenish magic charges is to use a house. There is an oddity with the house though. It replenishes your health, saves your game (if you choose to), and then restores your magic, in that order. This means that if you use a house, choose to save, and then turn off your game, when you reload the game your hit points will be restored but your magic will not have been replenished since it does so after saving. The best way around this that I could find was to use a house and then use a tent and save again, since they're only worth 75 GP anyways.
1 hour, 14 minutes, 25 seconds - Despite what I thought in the second video, the last enemy can actually run and end the battle. Perhaps it can only happen if it wasn't the only enemy?
1 hour, 24 minutes, 30 seconds - If you pause the game or get into a battle, you can clearly see the staircase underneath the slab here. That changes nothing.
1 hour, 59 minutes - This is the first time I ever used the rod without facing the slab and it worked! My intention was to look at the description of the rod before using it. I wonder how far away you can be and have it still work.
2 hours, 13 minutes, 55 seconds - Turns out you CAN have all enemies run. You get 1 experience point and 0 GP! The mystery is solved!
2 hours, 23 minutes, 10 seconds - After obtaining the canoe I think you're supposed to go to the Gurgu Volcano but why not visit this place first for some great gear? Oddly, the guy who stands in the entrance says you need the crown to proceed and then disappears when you talk to him. I was curious if you needed to talk to him or not but it appears that you don't. Also...the crown? That's a strange requirement since there's no way to get to this point without it and it was already used for something else. This must have been a mistake.
2 hours, 28 minutes - The Zeus Gauntlet is a great piece of equipment to use in battle, as it casts a free LIT2 each time.
2 hours, 28 minutes, 40 seconds - This sort of thing is not too uncommon in this game. At least it allowed me to go back and talk to the crown guy.
2 hours, 34 minutes, 20 seconds - The Heal Staff is a great item that casts a low level healing spell on your entire team in battle.
2 hours, 38 minutes, 20 seconds - The Sorcerer is a horrible enemy. It has has an ability that can paralyze you but also has an attack that causes instant death. There is nothing in the game to prevent this from working except luck. We'll be seeing a much worse appearance from them at some point.
3 hours, 15 minutes - Hanj got killed at Kary but I decided to press on, even though he will be leveling up slightly after the others now. Others will surely die later in the game anyways. She's also supposed to be vulnerable to the HOLD spell, but I couldn't get it to work.
