PREVIOUSLY ON FINAL FANTASY VI ADVANCE:

After Terra and Locke's scenarios, it was time to find out what happened to Sabin. A fork in the Lethe River sent Sabin drifting in a different direction. He washed up near a cabin, where he runs into Shadow, who's actually down to hang. It's a bit scary because he says he can literally leave at any moment, so every time a battle, I held my breath a bit in hopes Shadow would stay. Sabin needs to get back to Narshe and Shadow says his best bet is Doma, which the Empire seems poised to attack. Their commander is quickly defeated however by Cyan, the retainer to the King of Doma. General Leo prefers a patient approach to the siege, however when he's called away by the emperor, General Kefka is left in charge. Kefka resorts to some rather unsettling tactics as he proceeds to poison Doma's drinking water, killing every man, woman and child except Cyan (but including his wife, kid and the King). In his understandable rage, Cyan charges toward an imperial camp that was setup next to Doma and begins attacking imperial troops, now joined by Sabin and Shadow. Borrowing a couple Magitek Armor suits, our heroes make their way past the camp and continue on to Narshe through a thick wood.

IN THIS CHAPTER:

We'll go through the very brief woods and the much longer Phantom Train that follows. It's a fairly easy section and one of my favorite little chapters of the game. A couple of things to comment on for this section. It appears that the probability of Shadow leaving is higher if the battle takes place in a forest. But once you get to the Phantom Train, he's can't leave. There's a couple of treasures, but nothing I would feel bad about missing (second earring tho). Then we have the boss, the Phantom Train itself! There's a number of was to beat this boss. Since it's an undead monster, you can kill it instantly by using a Phoenix Down on it. But that's no fun. Also, Sabin's Aura Cannon has a 'Holy' property to it, so it does some good damage. But c'mon guys... we all know the preferred method of beating this boss is by having Sabin Suplex (known as 'Meteor Strike' in the Advance port) the Phantom Train! I messed up the Blitz at least once here, but I was able to get a Suplex or two in before the Phantom Train starts flashing death. It only has 1,900HP so really, it'll be dead in like three turns.
