Skeleton Warriors - SEGA Saturn - Intro & Levels 1-3, bosses & bike bonus stage [4K60]
Games and cartoons based on toy lines were fairly common back in the 90s both successful and unsuccessful. Skeleton Warriors is the latter with the range disappearing very quickly from memory, it only got a one series cartoon and we aren't sure if it aired here in the UK. After all who doesn't want figures based on the weakest form of undead monster the rather band looking skeleton. Maces and sledge hammers at the ready, to do battle with them, except Prince lightstar uses a sword which is the worst type of weapon for skeletons. The intro is worth watching just to see the odd narrator character, who appears to be a live actor introducing the story then is never seen again in-game.
It's easy to see why most kids left the Skeleton Warriors on the toy shelves and things were never going to be good for a game based on an unsuccessful toy range and cartoon. The game used CGI graphics which looked ugly and dated from the start (worse looking than Donkey Kong Country on SNES) mixed with 3D backgrounds. What you got is a very run of the mill platform hack and slash game that ranks as very average. Compared to other platformers in the genre like Keio 2, Croc, Castlevania, Sonic Jam, Shinobi X and Pandemonium.
The high point is the soundtrack, some of the visual effects and Starfox style on rails bike bonus stages. Even if the bike stages do go on for too long and have no real structure to them. The most interesting thing about the game is the fact the PAL version was misprinted by Virgin with the audio missing for some tracks and replaced with a rather unpleasant noise instead. It's not clear if they recalled or reprinted the game in Europe, hence why this video is the North American version. One for collectors and Skeleton Warriors fans either.
(Sorry all we had an incorrect content ID on one track, it looks like they both used the same library or classical piece of music.)
