GRID running on Ubuntu via Gallium Nine Wine with a HD5750
54For the first time, I've managed to get GRID running in Ubuntu 15.04 through the use of Gallium Nine and Wine!
A big thanks to Demetrius Lolos on YouTube for constantly keeping me up to date on Gallium Nine's improvements, and urging me to try it. Thank you Demetrius!
In this video, I take a look at running GRID 1 (Steam version) properly for the first time in Wine since it's release in 2007. I'm using Wine 1.7.38 from the winedri3 PPA on Ubuntu 15.04 64bit.
This video is generally cut into two sections:

2. Windowed-mode 1:00
3. Windowed racing 3:08
3. Fullscreen-mode 5:36
4. Fullscreen cockpit view 8:00
I was using Gallium's HUD for the fps OSD this time around.
For Intel iGPU and Nvidia GPU users, there's a very slim chance you can get this running in your setup as long as you're using the Open Source drivers for your cards (has to be latest).
If you're curious for the command I passed in the Terminal to start the Windows-version of Steam, this is it:
GALLIUM_HUD="fps" wine Steam.exe -no-dwrite
By installing the winedri3 PPA, we replace the default system Wine with the one from this PPA.
These are the steps to reproduce these results:
1. Use an AMD card with the Radeon OSS drivers
2. Install the Oibaf PPA
3. Install the winedri3 PPA
4. Tick use native D3D9 in Winecfg's Graphics tab
To install Oibaf PPA, open a terminal and do the following:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
To install winedri3 PPA, open a terminal and do the following:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:commendsarnex/winedri3
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine1.7
Restart your Ubuntu system to make sure the changes take place.
I can't believe I got Gallium Nine working, but I did and GRID is now playable!
I apologize in advance if I've made any mistakes, I attempted this video to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully you can take something informational away after watching this.
