About this video: In this video, we show you how to add more RAM to Minecraft 1.17. This will allow you to reduce lag in Minecraft 1.17 by giving Minecraft more RAM to work with. We also tell you how much RAM you need to add to Minecraft 1.17 for both vanilla and modded Minecraft. We even show you how to see the amount of RAM your computer has. Thus, without anymore delay, here is how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft 1.17!
The first step of giving Minecraft 1.17 more RAM is seeing how much RAM your PC has. You can do this by clicking the little Windows icon in the top or bottom left of your screen. Then, type ‘System Information’. You will then see a system information app. Open that app, and you will see all of the information about your PC. This includes your ‘Installed Physical Memory’. This is how much RAM your PC has on it.
You cannot add more than half of the RAM on the system information page to Minecraft. So if you have 8GB of RAM, you shouldn’t add more than 4GB to Minecraft. If you have 16GB, you should allocate more than 8GB of RAM to Minecraft.
Now that you know the MAX amount of RAM you should add to Minecraft for you computer, how much RAM does Minecraft need in 1.17? Well, for vanilla Minecraft, you don’t really need more than 4GB of RAM. However, vanilla Minecraft can usually run on 2GB of RAM without any issues. For modded Minecraft though, you will need a lot more RAM. Most modpacks require at least 4GB of RAM with some needing over 10GB of RAM to run completely lag free.
Alright, we have went over how much RAM your computer has and how much RAM you need for Minecraft. We haven’t, however, showed you how to add more RAM to Minecraft 1.17 yet. So, let’s go ahead and do that. To allocate more RAM to Minecraft 1.17, you need to open up the Minecraft launcher. In the Minecraft launcher, click on ‘Installations’. You will then see all of the Minecraft installations you have for Minecraft. You will need to add RAM to all of these installations as the RAM setting is different for each.
Hover over the installation that you want to add RAM to and click the three dots that appear. Then, click ‘Edit’. A pop-up will appear that shows some information about the installation. Click on ‘more options’. You will then see ‘JVM Arguments’. Here, you will see ‘-XMX2G’. There may be another number before the ‘G’. The ‘2G’ here is how much RAM Minecraft has. Change this number to how much RAM you want to dedicate to Minecraft. For example, ‘-XMX4G’ would be 4GB of RAM dedicated to Minecraft.
Once you have changed that number, you can save the installation and click Play on the installation. Minecraft will then open up with more RAM in 1.17! To check how much RAM Minecraft has, go into single player and press the ‘F3’ key. That will then open up the info menu for Minecraft. You can see the RAM Minecraft has in the top right of the screen.
