About this video: Java 17 is the latest compatible version of Java for Minecraft. If you are playing Minecraft 1.18 or newer, you will need to get Java 17 for both Minecraft servers and Minecraft mods. This is because Minecraft is Java based. Thus, any mods or changes you want to make to Minecraft Java Edition will need to be done using Java 17. The good news is getting Java 17 is a lot easier than installing mods for Minecraft, and it is 10x easier than running a Minecraft server. So, if you can install Minecraft mods or run a server, you can install Java 17 without any problems. Thus, let's jump right on into how to get Java 17 for Minecraft!
To get started, you will need go to the Download Java link in the description above. This will actually take you to our text tutorial for installing Java 17. This allows us to keep things up-to-date easily across all of our videos when Minecraft changes their Java version. Once you are on our website, you can scroll down and click the yellow 'Download Java Development Kit' button to be taken to the official Java 17 download page.
Once you are on the Java 17 download page, you will want to click the 'Windows' button. This can be difficult to see, but it is next to 'macOS'. Once Windows is selected, scroll down and click the blue link next to the 'x64 Installer'. This will start the download of Java 17. You most likely won't need to keep or save the file, but if you do, there is no worries. Java 17 is made by Oracle, so it is completely safe.
After you have Java 17 downloaded, we can get it installed. To install Java 17, double click on the file you downloaded. This will open the Java Installer. In this installer, click 'Next', click 'Next' again, and Java 17 will start installing. Then, you will be prompted to 'Close' the installer. Click the 'Close' button, and Java 17 has been installed! There isn't any desktop icon or anything like that because Java 17 works in the background.
You should now be able to open up your Minecraft mod installers and run your Minecraft server. In some cases though, you will still have issues. This is because your .jar files are linked to a program that isn't Java. The good news is that we have a simple program that will fix this. It is linked in the description above, and it is called the Jarfix. When you go to our website, click the yellow 'Download Jarfix' button to start the Jarfix downloading.
With the Jarfix downloaded, just double click on it to run it. It's that simple. You will get a confirmation that it has worked, and now all the .jar files on your computer will be linked to Java 17. This means that they will all work without any issues!
