How to Enable 1440p @120hz on your PS5 (Easy Method)
To enable 1440p at 120Hz on your PlayStation 5 PS5, you need to ensure your setup meets the requirements and then adjust the console settings. Here’s how to do it:
Requirements
Compatible Display: Your monitor or TV must support 1440p resolution at 120Hz. Many gaming monitors support this, but 1440p TVs are less common. Check your display’s specifications to confirm.
HDMI 2.1 Cable: Use the HDMI 2.1 cable included with your PS5, as it supports the bandwidth needed for 1440p at 120Hz. Older HDMI cables like HDMI 2.0 may limit you to 60Hz at 1440p.
Supported Games: Not all games support 1440p at 120Hz. Games like Call of Duty: Warzone or Fortnite often do, but check the game’s documentation.
Steps to Enable 1440p at 120Hz
Connect Your PS5 to the Display:
Plug your PS5 into the display using the included HDMI 2.1 cable. Ensure the HDMI port on your display supports 120Hz at 1440p, as some displays have specific ports for higher refresh rates.
Access PS5 Settings:
From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings, the gear icon in the top-right corner.
Adjust Video Output Settings:
Navigate to Screen and Video, then Video Output.
Under Resolution, select 1440p. If 1440p isn’t listed, your display may not support it, or the HDMI connection isn’t compatible.
Test 1440p Output:
In the same Video Output menu, select Test 1440p Output. The PS5 will test SDR/HDR at 60Hz and 120Hz, and VRR Variable Refresh Rate if supported. Follow on-screen prompts to confirm the display works at 1440p 120Hz.
If the test fails at 120Hz, for example with a black screen, some users on Reddit suggest pressing right then X on the controller during the black screen to force the PS5 to accept the resolution. However, this isn’t officially recommended and may not work for all displays.
Enable 120Hz Output:
Still in Video Output, find 120 Hz Output and set it to Automatic. This ensures the PS5 switches to 120Hz when a supported game is running.
Some users on X note that the PS5 menu remains at 60Hz, but 120Hz activates in supported games.
Set Performance Mode:
Go to Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Game Presets, Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
Select Performance Mode to prioritize frame rate over resolution, which is necessary for 120Hz in most games.
Launch a Supported Game:
Open a game that supports 1440p at 120Hz. In the game’s settings, often under a Video or Graphics tab, ensure 120Hz or Performance Mode is enabled if the option exists.
