How to Fix PS5 Controller Not Working in Game (Easy Method)
If your PS5 controller, DualSense, isn't working in games on your PS5, try these steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue:
Check Controller Connection:
Wired: Ensure the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the controller and PS5. Try a different cable or USB port.
Wireless: Press the PS button to reconnect via Bluetooth. If it doesn’t pair, reset the controller, see step 4.
Go to Settings, Accessories, General, Bluetooth Accessories to confirm the controller is paired.
Restart the PS5 and Controller:
Turn off the PS5 completely, not Rest Mode, and unplug it for 1-2 minutes.
Turn off the controller by holding the PS button and selecting Accessories, DualSense Wireless Controller, Turn Off.
Restart both and test the game.
Update Firmware and Software:
Controller Firmware: Connect the controller via USB, go to Settings, Accessories, Controllers, Wireless Controller Device Software, and update if available.
PS5 System Software: Go to Settings, System, System Software, System Software Update and Settings to ensure the console is up to date.
Game Updates: Check for game patches in the game’s menu or PlayStation Store.
Reset the Controller:
Locate the small reset button on the back of the controller, near the Sony logo.
Use a paperclip or pin to press and hold it for 5 seconds.
Re-pair the controller by connecting it to the PS5 via USB and pressing the PS button.
Test in Another Game or Menu:
Check if the controller works in the PS5 home menu or other games. If it works elsewhere, the issue may be game-specific, try reinstalling the game.
Test with a different controller, if available, to rule out hardware issues.
Check for Interference or Battery Issues:
Move closer to the PS5 to avoid Bluetooth interference from other devices, e.g., Wi-Fi routers, headsets.
Charge the controller fully, check battery status in Settings, Accessories, Controllers, Battery. If it doesn’t charge, try a different cable or charging method.
Reinstall the Game:
If the issue is isolated to one game, delete it, Settings, Storage, Games and Apps, and reinstall it from the disc or PlayStation Store.
Check for Hardware Issues:
If the controller doesn’t respond in any game or menu, inspect for physical damage, sticks, buttons, or ports.
Test another controller. If the second controller works, the original may be faulty.
Contact Sony Support:
If none of the above work, visit support.playstation.com to initiate a repair or replacement for the controller or consult PS5 troubleshooting guides.
