How to Fix Lag Spikes on PS5 & Latency issues (Connection Settings)
If you’re dealing with lag spikes and latency issues on your PS5, it can really throw off your gaming experience, but there are some solid steps you can take to smooth things out. These problems usually stem from network instability, console settings, or even your internet setup. Here’s how to tackle them:
Start by testing your internet connection to get a baseline. On your PS5, go to Settings, Network, Connection Status, Test Internet Connection. Look at the download and upload speeds, plus the latency, which might show as ping if available. A good connection for gaming should have at least 15-20 Mbps download, 5 Mbps upload, and a ping under 50 ms. If those numbers are off, the issue might be your network.
Next, restart everything—your PS5, router, and modem. For the PS5, fully power it down via Settings, System, Power, Turn Off PS5, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. Unplug your router and modem for 30 seconds, then plug them back in and let them reboot. This can clear up temporary network congestion or glitches causing spikes.
If you’re using Wi-Fi, check your signal strength. Go to Settings, Network, Settings, Set Up Internet Connection, and select your Wi-Fi network. If the signal is weak, move your PS5 closer to the router or remove obstacles like walls or electronics between them. Even better, switch to a wired Ethernet connection if possible. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router to the PS5’s LAN port, set it up in the same menu, and test it. Wired connections are more stable and less prone to interference, which can cut down on lag spikes.
Now, tweak your DNS settings, since slow DNS resolution can add latency. In Settings, Network, Settings, Set Up Internet Connection, pick your connection, hit Advanced Settings, and change DNS Settings to Manual. Use Google’s DNS, Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4, or Cloudflare’s, Primary 1.1.1.1, Secondary 1.0.0.1. Save and test the connection again. These public servers are often faster than your ISP’s default.
Check your game-specific settings too. Some titles let you pick server regions—go into the game’s online settings and choose a server closer to your location to lower ping. Also, if you’re mid-match and spiking, pause and check the game’s network status; it might be a server-side issue, not your setup.
If lag persists, look at bandwidth usage in your home. Streaming, downloads, or other devices on the same network can choke your PS5’s connection. Pause those activities or prioritize gaming traffic via your router’s Quality of Service settings, usually found in its admin page, accessed by typing its IP address into a browser. Set your PS5’s MAC address, found in Settings, Network, Connection Status, as the priority device.
