How to Stop USB devices shutting off on Windows 10 or 11 PC
If your USB devices keep shutting off on Windows 10 or 11, it’s likely due to power management settings, driver issues, or hardware-related problems. Here’s how to stop it:
1. Disable USB Power Management
Windows may turn off USB devices to save power.
Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click USB Root Hub (or similar) and select Properties.
Go to the Power Management tab.
Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Click OK and repeat for all USB Root Hub entries.
2. Disable USB Selective Suspend in Power Settings
This prevents Windows from disabling USB ports when idle.
Press Win + R, type control, and press Enter.
Go to Hardware and Sound- Power Options.
Click Change plan settings next to your active plan.
Click Change advanced power settings.
Expand USB settings -USB selective suspend setting and set it to Disabled.
Click Apply and OK.
3. Update or Reinstall USB Drivers
Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause USB disconnections.
Press Win + X, select Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click each USB Root Hub and select Update driver.
Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the issue persists:
Right-click the USB device, select Uninstall device, then restart your PC to reinstall it automatically.
4. Use a Different USB Port or Hub
Plug your device into a different USB port (preferably USB 3.0 or 3.1, usually blue).
If using a USB hub, make sure it’s a powered one.
If on a desktop PC, try using the rear USB ports instead of front ones.
