This area is right after the Waiting Room. On PC, it's possible to scan the first two Smiles together, even if the second one is seemingly too far. The range is a little narrow; it works a little over halfway between the second wooden beam and the second lantern. Being right next to the second lantern is fairly reliable, for the most part, so long as you don't go too far.

I haven't been able to get it on console yet. My assumption is that the scan range is slightly different on PC, either due to widescreen or some other side effect.

Naturally, it is faster to go through this room without stopping to scan at all, but the first two Smiles are notoriously difficult to see otherwise. The second Smile around the corner is especially aggravating due to its awkward placement, so being able to actually see it is a huge boon. The last Smile is pretty easy to see without scanning thanks to the building behind it.
