Let’s Play BG2 EE #22: Marching into the Spider’s Maw
141Spiders are a dangerous enemy for low to mid level parties in D&D. This is in part due to their poison but that alone isn’t where the threat lies. Most spiders encountered are far larger then the common household variety and they have a wide variety of abilities, be it the ability to teleport or being lightning fast. Their webs entangle and bog down adventurers who, robbed of their mobility, are rendered far more vulnerable then they’d normally be. Finally, they aren’t always alone, for ettercaps and other creatures work alongside them to take advantage of their abilities.
Because of this, only a fool underestimates spiders even at high levels. Caution and care need to be taken when walking into a spiders den as well as preparing certain spells that will help mitigate their poison and webs. Area of effect spells are useful in dealing with large groups of them as is the haste spell, but the best defence is always not letting them get close enough to hit you in the first place. Unfortunately we’re a bit short on ranged capabilities so we’ll have to rely on melee to overcome some of them, but I’m sure Edwin will prove his worth here and show us just a hint of his arcane power.
