Let’s Play Commander Keen IOTV #02: Go Go Pogo
The pogo stick is an item that is both awesome and perilous to use, a true double-edged sword. It dramatically improves the vertical of your jumps at the cost of making your horizontal movement a lot less precise. It makes it all the more likely that you’ll plummet into doom but the lure of extra points is worth the risk for many players. I imagine the pogo stick is what’s used a lot in speedruns of the game, circumventing chunks of levels with pixel perfect jumps but I can’t get manage the normal jumps without failure, so that’s something that’s never going to be possible for me.
I do like that the game is slowly ramping up the difficulty as it progresses, showing you new things that you can learn about in the relative safety of the levels you encounter them in. The optional shrines are also nice to see, giving you hints on finding hidden areas and other cues on how to complete the episode. I imagine they’re avoided entirely when you know what the clue given in them is, allowing you to get through the episode even faster. If you can avoid the pogo stick is another matter, something I’m sure many people know the answer to that I’ll discover in due course.
