Let's Play Mario & Luigi: Starlight Island Adventure - Part 9: A Boss, a Frog, and a Bog
On to the second part of Fungus Forest. Fungus Forest 4/5-4, despite being on a bit of an island, doesn't contain any water. World 5 doesn't have any underwater or underground levels at all, just lots of forest. But hey, that's okay...I like forest levels. Though this one is more of a swamp than a forest. It's probably one of the more interesting levels, with platforms floating in toxic mud (read: palette-swapped lava), silhouettes of trees in the background, a thick mist all around, and frogs on pogo sticks. (Hey, I didn't come up with the idea, just designed the sprite...and it has the distinction of being the first real custom sprite I ever made.) These frogs, in their four different forms, make up most of the enemies in this stage. After this comes Roy's castle, which is...not really noteworthy, to be honest. It has Firebars, Podoboos, lots of lava, and a section with the large spike pillars, though I think this was the first level to have the Bowser statue enemies. Roy himself can actually be kind of a pain due to how fast his one attack comes out and how troublesome dodging it can be. He jumps offscreen, slams down, and releases three flames in a spreadshot fashion that move quite fast. I'm probably missing something here, but I got hit almost every time he did because the flames kept getting me. Defeating him grants access to the sixth world...but so does another level that I waited until now to tackle. Remember Maxwell's Bridge, unlocked from the secret exit of 4-4? Well, here it is, a large athletic level with plenty to watch out for. You have to cross large pits, often by jumping across giant Para-Beetles that go down when stood on, and Sledge Bros. are all over the place. Even the boss is a variation of a Sledge Bro, a large yellow one with a sort of '70s hairstyle that takes multiple hits to bring down. Another boss that dealt almost as much damage to me as I did to it...still, though, this level used to be more difficult. In previous versions of Mario & Luigi: Starlight Island Adventure, the level had auto-scroll, which was as nasty as it sounds. In this version, the level scrolls normally, making it a good deal easier to deal with.
