This version of Gradius 2 uses the VRC4 mapper chip to enhance the graphics and sound. Because the US's NES couldn't support these mapper chips, they were unable to bring this game overseas, so it remains a JP exclusive. It's too bad, because it's a great game that pushes the console to its limits.
It's not quite the same as the original Gradius 2; it's very heavily remixed, and while all of the arcade game's levels are present, they've either been given new layouts or been combined into new levels. Even a good chunk of the soundtrack is totally different.
Due to not being an arcade game it's also better balanced for casual play. The arcade Gradius 2 gets really difficult from the third level onwards, but this version is a lot more relaxed since it's not trying to take your quarters. It's just as worth playing as the original arcade version.
